What is this mysterious place that my children visit daily? Is it safe? Does it have any value to my family or business? This book has provided me with the tools to understand and appreciate the power of MySpace. It is an easy and fascinating read and after completion serves as an excellent user friendly referance manual. Last week I was a technology challenged dork. After reading 'MySPace for Dummies' I am now proud to be a MySpace geek. Thank you Ryan Hupfer.

Truth and Rumors: The Reality Behind TV's Most Famous Myths (The Praeger Television Collection) Review

Truth and Rumors: The Reality Behind TV's Most Famous Myths (The Praeger Television Collection)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Veteran TV critic Bill Brioux has written a book that's heavily reported, immensely informative, and almost embarrassingly entertaining. The premise of Truth and Rumors is as original as it is ambitious: The idea is to collect, in one book, al the persistent rumors surrounding television shows, stars and events, and separate the facts from the fictions.
If the rumors don't make you drop you jaw, or laugh out loud, the answers will. Brioux employs a writing style that is both breezy and authoritative, as evidenced by this very quick setup to one unusual rumor.
"RUMOR: Joanie Loves Chachi was the biggest TV hit ever in South Korea because 'Chachi' is Korean for 'penis.'
"FALSE: Let's get one thing straight. Joanie Loves Chachi was never a hit, in Korea or anywhere else."
That's gold right there, but Brioux keeps going. He informs readers that yes, "jaw-jee" is a Korean slang term for the male genitalia, and no, the Scott Baio sitcom never aired on regular South Korean TV.
So much ground is covered here - and not just covered, but dug up. Did LBJ really call Walter Cronkite to complain about his CBS newscast while Cronkite was in the middle of that very show? Did a local newswoman in Florida commit suicide on live TV, after announcing to viewers she would do so? And did Michael Jackson provide the voice of a character on The Simpsons?
Through direct reporting, Brioux provides the answers: yes, yes, and yes. And answers to a lot more, in delightful chapters with such titles as "The Naked Truth" and "Ward, I'm Worried about the Beaver."

When you first heard it, you couldn't believe it: Jerry Mathers, from TV's Leave It To Beaver, had been killed in Vietnam. Then word came that Abe Vigoda, the actor who played the curmudgeonly cop Fish on Barney Miller, was dead; and that Mikey, who would eat anything as the Life Cereal tyke, had eaten too many Pop Rocks and exploded. Besides exposing us to things we couldn't otherwise believe, television can convince us of things that never actually happened. But how did these outrageous TV legends get started? How did they spread from classrooms to boardrooms across North America and beyond? And, most important, what do these rumors, so quickly transformed into facts and common knowledge, reveal about our relationship to reality through the medium of television? Put in other words, what exactly is it that were doing when were dealing in these fabulous rumors-are we chasing after surprising truths or simply more incredible entertainment?

To take one telling example: Jerry Mathers was not actually killed in Vietnam-but the basic sense of this lie wasn't far removed from the emotions factually expressed in the two-page spread of the faces of the dead in Time magazine. In the course of this compelling work-which is supplemented with interviews with many of the people implicated in these rumors-author Bill Brioux exposes the reality behind the many stories that currently circulate in our culture. Through these stories (both true and false), he sheds a revealing light on just what role these rumors play in contemporary society-and what role our society plays in regard to these rumors as well.

The Beatles Way: Fab Wisdom for Everyday Life Review

The Beatles Way: Fab Wisdom for Everyday Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge Beatles fan, and have read all the books on the market about the Fab Four. I thought I'd seen it all, so I didn't think I'd like this new "self-help" styled book.
Wow - was I wrong! Because I LOVED it! For the first time, I see the Beatles legacy actually helping me to live my own life in a more powerful, creative and joyful way.
The author knows his stuff, I learned several things I never knew about the Beatles. The author especially captures the spiritual essence of our dear-departed beloved George Harrison, and clearly shows his impact on the group and the world.
PLUS - "The Beatles Way" is never boring or preachy. It's a fun read, and Lange puts the "Yeah!" into the "Yeah Yeah Yeah!"
Get this book! I bought six copies for my friends and kids - it's the only self-help book I ever found useful! Kudos and thanks to the author for this breath of fresh air.

Thirty-one years after the Fab Four disbanded, Beatlemania continues in full swing. The group's latest CD, 1, is one of the fastest-selling records in history; their biography, Anthology, is a bestseller; and a new generation is falling under their spell. By analyzing the Beatles' extraordinary journey, Larry Lange has discerned specific principles that illustrate how to live more profound, richer, and happier lives. These principles include harnessing the power of dreaming, learning to set and meet goals, dealing with fear of the unknown, working as a team while remaining self-sufficient, keeping dreams fresh, and remaining open to spirituality and social responsibility. The book offers these principles of success and the exuberance of the Beatles as an alternative to traditional personal growth books.

Intimate Nights: The Golden Age of New York Cabaret Review

Intimate Nights: The Golden Age of New York Cabaret
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If life is truly a cabaret, than James Gavin has written a spectacular history of that night life. This updated edition of Gavin's 1992 book of the same title concerns the history of cabaret in America--and it's a real dazzler.
Beginning in the speakeasies of the '30s and progressing through the glamorous '40s and '50s to the repressive '50s, the book takes us to the wide-open sexuality of the '60s and '70s, the devastation from HIV of the '80s and early '90s to where we stand today. It's a show-biz history of an admittedly small niche in American entertainment, but an extraordinarily rich and creative one. From Bobby Short and Mabel Mercer through Phyllis Diller and Barbra Streisand and Peter Allen to the Callaway sisters, Barbara Cook and Ute Lemper, there is something here for all tastes and all moods.
The art of cabaret--and be sure it is an art--is the experience of sitting in a quiet club, some glamorous, some sewers, and listening to a singer perform . . . seemingly just for you. Old standards are reinterpreted, new material marveled at, forgotten songs recalled. The audience in encouraged to feel, think--and maybe have a drink or two. Scrupulously researched, Gavin has managed to not only create a chronological history (including the stars, and the genius accompanists, crafty presenters, scummy landlords and adoring fans) but lovingly describes performers and performances. But be forewarned: The discography at the end of the book is incredibly comprehensive, and by the time you've finished reading about these legendary talents, you're going to want pull out the charge card and hit amazon.com
So stop sitting alone in your room, buy this book, and discovers just how much more music you can hear play, if, old friend, you come to the cabaret.

But that doesn't mean it's dry and academic. Good heavens, no! Settle in for racy tales of nightlife, revealed in interviews with dozens of the people who lived it: Bobby Short, Eartha Kitt, Mabel Mercer, Bette Midler, and many more. Author James Gavin has tracked down rare, early stories about the legends who came out of New York nightclubs—and that means Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen, Nichols and May, Johnny Mathis, Carol Burnett, Lenny Bruce, among others. Bronx to Broadway: A Life in Show Business

Hal Thau's career, as with most high achievers, is a study of perseverance, determination and introspection. As he discusses the "pioneering spirit" in one chapter, the reader sees clearly through his examples and experiences that Thau does indeed have the pioneering spirit...and the ability to work with others (actors, entertainers, etc.) who also have it to help them "focus." I found his mix of sharing about the celebrities he managed and the personal glimpses of his own life and values excellent. I also appreciated Thau's poetic way of expressing things...his observations and introspection are thoughtfully and often poignantly expressed... It is so very interesting to read of this man's success in show business/management/producing and to also see he has kept his feet on the ground. His is an example of a life in which both worldly success and personal success are achieved and balanced. I highly recommend this book for all who share an entrepreneurial spirit--for all who seek to follow their dreams...it is an inspiring and insightful book.

These Frommmer guides are very good, and this one on Austin and San Antonio is no different. I am very familiar with these two cities and I find the suggestions in this guide to be on the whole very accurate. Though the hotel and restaurant sections are top loaded with the most famous and expensive, some smaller properties and resturants are not included. The sites section however is perfect, the guides descriptions and ratings are close to perfect. What I really appreciate about the Frommer guides is that you really feel like they have researched the subject, granted that should be a prerequisite in a travel guide, but unfortunitely in my experience that is not always the case.

Boston For Dummies Review

Boston For Dummies
Average Reviews:

I bought this because I've read some books in the Dummies series. After finally figuring out where we wanted to stay in Boston (location/hotel), I realized that this is all this book is good for. Yes, it does include a lot of tourist information, but the layout of the book just makes it hard to read. Or uninteresting. I used it just for the location of stay and that's it. I'm going to buy Frommers book on Boston and use it during my trip since Frommers' book layout is much better and includes the same types of maps. I've used Frommers many times for different trips.
I think if you just need a starter book to get your trip going, then this is a good book to look at, but I wouldn't bring it along while you're on the trip. Maybe go visit your public library instead of buying it or try to find it used. And, if you're comfortable with the internet, you could just find out the information you need before going on your trip by using some of the travel sites available to get info and opinions.

I love to thoroughly research and plan vacations, gleaning recommendations and experiences from as many independent sources as possible. Therefore, I ordered BOTH Frommer's Bahamas 2007 and Bahamas for Dummies to get two different opinions. Bahamas for Dummies repeats Frommer's hotel and restaurant recommendations WORD-FOR-WORD. The Dummies who wrote this book obviously did NO independent research of their own. In fact in turns out Wiley published both books. The only redeeming feature is the cute little post-it flags, that I can stick inside my Frommers guide book!

Insiders' Guide to Austin, 6th (Insiders' Guide Series)
Average Reviews:

A lot is true in the above review - as far as the city of Austin is concerned. However, in my opinion not as far as the guidebook itself is concerned. Each major city has a guidebook, no matter how friendly it is. Austin has more then one (Moon's Austin also) and the Insider's Guide to Austin is a really good piece of work. Of course, the restaurant section can only be a small selection, as Austin has a lot of places to eat and a book doesn't have many pages. Also the area overvies may not be something to everybody's taste, as they tent to be a bit stereotypical - districts have different parts within themselves. However most sections: Accomodation, Relocation, Day Trips, Worship etc. are quite useful for first time visitors and the book is very well written. So yes, you probably don't need a guidebook for Austin, but if you do prefer to have one, then this is a very good book!

This work covers 840 intentional suicide cases initially reported in Daily Variety (the entertainment industry's trade journal), but also drawing attention from mainstream news media. These cases are taken from the ranks of vaudeville, film, theatre, dance, music, literature (writers with direct connections to film), and other allied fields in the entertainment industry from 1905 through 2000. Accidentally self-inflicted deaths are omitted, except for a few controversial cases. It includes the suicides of well-known personalities such as actress Peg Entwistle, who is the only person to ever commit suicide by jumping from the top of the Hollywood Sign, Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandridge, who are believed to have overdosed on drugs, and Richard Farnsworth and Brian Keith, who shot themselves to end the misery of terminal cancer. Also mentioned, but in less detail, are the suicides of unknown and lesser-known members of the entertainment industry. Arranged alphabetically, each entry covers the person's personal and professional background, method of suicide, place of burial, and, in some instances, includes actual statements taken from the suicide note.

This book is ideal for a short trip to Toronto or for those who don't care to carry large, bulky books with them on vacation. Most of the information is short, to the point, with a minimum of color commentary. There is a section devoted to the history of the city and references to other books for those who want more information. The book is small enough to fit in a backpack or even a coat pocket so it can be carried with you. Probably not ideal for an extended stay, but overall helpful.

Pocket-size London Rough guide is a basic guide for London. It gives basic information for attractions including addresses, phone numbers and hours. It works as supplemental but you need to use along with more comprehensive resources. I purchased it most specifically to have a purse-size reference with the maps--the tube map in the front, the fold-out in the back and maps included throughout the book have good detail. These were very useful on a recent London trip.
The price of the guide including the maps is similar to the price of some maps alone so it is a decent value.
