This was a great book! Adam sandler is my 2nd favorite actor. He is one of my greatest inspirations. This taught me a lot about him. He did not have a sad story like Jim Carrey but he is still a great person. This book was written very well and is one of the greatest books I have ever read!

From the comedy clubs of New York to his big break on "Saturday Night Live" to block-buster films like "Big Daddy" and "Little Nicky" Adam Sandler has left America howling in their seats and peeing in their pants. Sandler has emerged as the decade's most unstoppable comedic-and the ladies love him!But how many people know the story behind this lovable comedic prodigy's ascent to fame? Bill Crawford takes you back to Sandler's childhood in a small New Hampshire Town, where his stand-up routines were always hits with his classmates but not necessarily the teachers! When Adam left his small town to take on the big city at New York University, it wasn't always easy, Sandler performed as a street musician crooning Springsteen songs to commuters, but he was destined to succeed. From his long friendship with then college classmate Tim Herlihy, who went on to co-write all Sandler's movies, to being discovered by Dennis Miller and eventually becoming America's funnyman, Bill Crawford looks behind the headlines and tabloid tales to shed new light on this decade's comedic darling.

Me of Little Faith Review

Me of Little Faith
Average Reviews:

This is an hilarious set of essays documenting one man's effort to understand his own spirituality as well as that which has been (and continues to be) thrust upon him by his semi-Jewish upbringing and many well-meaning friends. Honestly, I was in tears with laughter as he suggested those of us who gather annually to fight over Christmas dinner should keep our voices down lest we wake the baby Jesus. (I don't recall inviting Lewis Black to my family's Christmas dinner, but I could swear he'd given a fairly accurate account in this book!)
The zealots of religion (i.e., those who feel they need to step in and defend God) need to turn away from this book immediately. If you can't laugh at yourself and your human foibles -- especially with regard to how you practice your faith -- you won't find this book funny at all. The rest of us -- those of us who know we are human, frail, and utterly laughable at times in the eyes of God as well as those around us -- are ready converts to Black's satire of the human spiritual condition.
OK, I could have done without the reprint of the play toward the end of the book. Some comedy just doesn't come across when you read it on the page because you need the voices and the visual nonverbals to make it work. I expect it would be hilarious if I could actually see it (note to publishers: Next time just give us a DVD or a URL, OK?), but it doesn't do well when read.
But that's the only little sour note in this collection. It's funny, it's touching, and it's the best set of observations on faith in the US I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

Sammy: The Autobiography of Sammy Davis, Jr. Review

Sammy: The Autobiography of Sammy Davis, Jr.
Average Reviews:

For beginners, this isn't bad. But those who are familiar with "Yes I can" and "Why Me?" (the Davis bios that this book was edited from) will not be happy. Too much of the good stuff from "Yes I Can" is missing, such as Sammy's guilt over his treatment of James Dean and his own mistreatment at the hands of other children and teenagers. Those were some of the most moving parts of that book and they should be included here. Oh well, you can always read the original.

Sammy Davis, Jr. (1925-90) rose from childhood stardom on the vaudeville stage to become one of the most famous African American entertainers of the 1950s and '60s (and the only black member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack). At the same time, he spent most of his career surrounded by controversy and ridicule--over his affairs with white film stars, his 1960 marriage to Swedish actress May Britt, his conversion to Judaism, his closeness to the Kennedys (and later Richard Nixon), and his problems with alcohol and drugs. When Davis published his first memoir, Yes, I Can, in 1965, it was a critical and popular success--acclaimed for a candor and thoughtfulness rare in celebrity autobiographies and for its painful evocation of life as a black peformer in segregated America.Davis's 1980 memoir, Why Me?, laid bare Davis's troubled relationship to the Kennedys, his ambivalence toward the Black Pride movement, the end of his marriage to Britt (and his complex open marriage with Altovise Davis), and his flamboyant, self-loathing misbehavior, from ruinous extravagance to flirtations with Satanism.Davis's co-writer Burt Boyar has revised Davis's memoirs, incorporating material from unpublished interviews, and has added a new introduction and epilogue. The result is a testament to an unacknowledged--often uncomfortable--leader in the struggle for racial equality.

Steve Goodman: Facing the Music Review

Steve Goodman: Facing the Music

This is an exhaustively researched, passionately written biography of one of folk music's real treasures. The range of people interviewed, from playground pals to "really famous big time musicians" is huge, and the message is consistent--great talent, great sense of humor, great love of life, great man. I'll never forget any of the times I saw him; the last time, when his health was clearly fading and he was sharing a bill with John Prine came back to me like a film. Thank you for writing this book, thank you for keeping Steve Goodman alive. I hope you find a wide audience and that Steve is "discovered" by many more people.

The Truth About Harvard: A Behind the Scenes Look at Admissions and Life on Campus (College Admissions Guides)

This book told me EXACTLY what I wanted to know. I had an impression that Harvard's reputation was so internationally impressive to people who were not alumni that it would attract a student body of careerists and those hungry for elitism. Well, it doesn't sound that bad from this book but this is definitely a work towards future payoffs school and not a school spirit school. But Harvard sounds so well run that it's not about alumni connections but the school taking really good care of its students past and present. Also worth knowing is that the students tend to be emotionally and financially well fed so kids who have had abusive parents or grew up impoverished despite having intellectual ability may feel isolated. But I think everyone who gets all A's should apply to Harvard and see if they will get in since the admissions process is needs-blind although legacies are a tie-breaker. The school's reputation is basically international kevlar - like a law degree - if you have it in your pocket, you basically at least turn the Machiavellian point of the sword away from you if not outward from you. Even though this book was written a few years ago, I didn't feel that I had made a bad purchase.

I've now read about five or six biographies of Steven Spielberg and all vary in depth and quality. However Joseph McBride book can only be described as THE most in-depth account of Spielberg's fascinating life. You simply won't read a more well-researched account of Spielberg's life unless the great man writes his autobiography. Don't be put off by the fact that Spielberg didn't co-operate with this book, virtually everyone else did including, most surprisingly, his father. A terrific read from start to finish.

Not Fade Away: A Backstage Pass to 20 Years of Rock and Roll

I bought this book after seeing Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous". That was an exceptional movie and I thought I would relive the era through Ben fong-Torres, who was featured in the movie.
The book is really a reprint of many of his stories in Rolling Stone which the reviews probably stated and I didn't focus on. I would have preferred his story of being close to the Rock and Roll scene. Reading some of the articles that were over 20 years old became somewhat boring and outdated. I did learn quite a bit in some of the stories and Fong-Torres does provide some narrative on each story although it is limited. Overall though, I'd take a pass on this one and look for another if you are looking for a good book about rock in the 70's and 80's.

100 Great Businesses and the Minds Behind Them Review

100 Great Businesses and the Minds Behind Them
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Never the original purpose of the authors, this book enables you to have dialogs with anyone you meet in any business gathering. It's 100 books on successful brands combined. I like it because typical books on single brands' success "stories" are mostly written by the non-founders. They all end up sitting somewhere on your bookshelf, unfinished, because of the unnecessary (and mostly dull) details plus the authors' second-guesses of the founders' original intents.
On the contrary, this book is written in a reporter's perspective, with no "MSG" added. Covering all the big brands and a few you don't (or I don't) know. Though each brand has only 3 to 4 pages of coverage, it has all you want to know plus some uncommon interesting details even for common brands. Perfect preachers for "Less is more".
Indeed, who on earth today is interested in 800-page details of one single brand while 777 of them are only author's views of the founder's?

Will Rogers: A Biography Review

Will Rogers: A Biography
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is probably the best biography of Will Rogers currently available. It is comprehensive, insightful, well researched, and balanced. My only complaint with it is that it ends somewhat abruptly. Yagoda touches briefly on the legacy of Will Rogers after his death, but he could have said a great deal more. Rogers's death evoked profound mourning across the US and the rest of the world, and it would have been nice if he had focused a bit more on that. His analysis, however, of why Rogers gradually ceased to be what he was in his own time--arguably the most popular American who ever lived--is very helpful. I had always found his comparative demise to be quite perplexing, and Yagoda does a superb job of explaining this phenomenon.
One of the greatest virtues of the book is that it does not, like many books on Rogers, engage in hagiography. Will Rogers was a very good, compassionate, honest man. Any book on his will show that. He had his faults, but as presented by Yagoda, they do not diminish the man, whatever it may do to the myth. For instance, Yagoda insightfully points out that while Rogers was rightfully lauded for his wisdom and insight, his thought was marred by an inability to comprehend genuine evil. One is left wondering what Rogers's response to Hitler's behavior in the years just after Rogers's death, and what he would have been able to say about the moral complexities of the Second World War. On the other hand, I would very much have welcomed Rogers as a voice of reason during the days of the Communist Witch Hunts.
Anyone interested in Rogers is strongly encouraged to read this book. I would also like to recommend the first chapter in Lary May's THE BIG TOMORROW. This book is a study of the social dimensions of American cinema from the thirties through the fifties. The first and best chapter is about Will Rogers, and remains the best thing that I have read about Will Rogers. I strongly recommend both books.

Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin Review

Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, I bought Kathy's book yesterday and I stayed up all night reading it. Yes, I am a big fan of hers and so perhaps I am a little biased but why would you even be looking at this book if you weren't a fan of hers?
She successfully walks the line between serious autobiography and comedic book. Parts of it will rip your heart out while others will make you laugh out loud. I can't say that I love her more now than I did before but I do understand her a bit more. I can't wait to see her live again.
Since she talks so much in her act about her celebrity encounters don't expect any amazing revelations there. There were a few new stories (Steve Martin etc.) but for the most part it really chronicles her entire life and career and shows how hard she worked and the insanity she put up with to get to where she is now. Great stories about her early years with the Groundlings and her friends Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz, Lisa Kudrow, Julia Sweeney, Jeaneane Garofolo, Margaret Cho and more. You are going to learn where and why she has the work ethic that she does. She never sold out, she did do it all her way.
I loved the book, like I said I read it in about 6 hours cover to cover. My only complaint is that there were no color pictures in the book like most typical biographies.
Also as an ex Los Angelino is was nice to hear her talking about my old stomping in grounds in West Hollywood and her adventures there. I also jumped on the back of a bike at the Carl's Jr on La Brea and Santa Monica OMG!!! Wonder if we banged the same guy!! HAH!!
BUY THE BOOK!!!

African American History For Dummies Review

African American History For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Book Review by Kam Williams
"African-American history, to be clear, is so much more than a handful of extraordinary individuals or practices like slavery, Jim Crow, and civil rights. A lot of it is painful, but it's also inspiring and triumphant... It took the Civil War, the civil rights movement of the 1960s, and a lot of struggle in between to secure African-Americans the basic right to citizenship that white Americans took for granted.
[This book] isn't a big sermon on the struggle; instead, it's a straightforward, interesting (I hope!), and honest overview of African-American history from Africa through the transatlantic slave trade, slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the 1960s civil rights movement until now. Along the way, that history birthed a culture that includes the black church and education as well as sports, music, literature, television, and film.
--Excerpted from the Introduction
I majored in black studies in college way back when the new field of study was still generally being dismissed as a joke or, at best, as undeserving of being the focus of extensive scholarly research. So, my interest was particularly piqued by the publication of this book for a few of reasons.
First, I wondered whether the subject-matter would be presented in a serious and dignified fashion, given the "for Dummies" subtitle. Secondly, I was curious about how comprehensive the text would be, and whether the author would even be able to address most of the significant events in African-American history in a work of just over 400 pages. And finally, and perhaps most importantly, I wanted to get a sense of the opus' point of view, since there's a big difference between talking about memorable milestones from the perspective of the victims of racism and that of the perpetrators.
The good news is that African American History for Dummies passes the first two tests with flying colors. The tome is encyclopedic in scope, yet surprisingly engaging in tone, being written by someone with a gift for serving up a chronological collection of facts on a zillion different topics in a lyrical style that sounds downright conversational. Credit for achieving this feat goes to author Ronda Racha Penrice, a Columbia University graduate who has served as an editor at the Quarterly Black Review, and who has written for such publications as essence, AOL Black Voices, Vibe and Africana.com
Where I do take issue with her otherwise praiseworthy approach are on the rare occasions that she seemingly attempts to be on both sides of the fence when discussing hot button issues such as the N-word ("Slaves sometimes referred to themselves as [...]) and the Dred Scott Decision ("The Supreme Court decided that, because Scott was African American, he wasn't a citizen and therefore couldn't sue anybody.").
By trying hard not to offend anyone in the above quoted entries, Ms. Penrice risks, in the first instance, misleading impressionable young minds into believing that the N-word was a slur first used by blacks. As for Dred Scott, the actual ruling unequivocally deemed African-Americans, "beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations, and so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect," a far crueler declaration than the author's relatively benign interpretation.
Thus, African American History for Dummies is recommended reading for those who would prefer the truth at times tempered by euphemisms which appear intended to make the ordeal endured by blacks in this country over the ages sound a lot less monstrous than it undoubtedly was. The historical equivalent of smooth jazz.

Very well crafted work here. The author provides a great deal of compelling evidence to suggest how early Lifestyle patterns influence faulty thinking later on in life. Beyond the technical aspects of this technique, this book takes great pain to identify the struggles each of these men underwent to set things right in their lives, while still falling victim to their deeply habituated behavior. I never fully considered how common these compensatory behaviors are in comedians, and this book definitely holds a light up to this phenomenon.

"RanDumb" is funny and all that. However, it is even funnier when Mark reads it in person and adds editorial comments. I think I read somewhere he is about to start doing that soon on his YouTube channel. If he does I will be one of his regulars.
Because the chapters are relatively short; I can catch a read while waiting for:
microwave popcorn
microwave eggs
in the loo
crock pot cooking
up loads
downloads
tech support in India
customer service at Chase
noise complaint 911 line representative
Hey Mark, you are funnier than I thought you would be, dude.
The funny holds up even without you using your Irish-Schoolboy-looks-thingy.
Because for everybody that doesn't know, Mark is hotter than the photos on the book's covers.
Way hotter!
It's kinda like getting a little stand-up with my Quaker Oatmeal every morning.
I guess "RanDumb" is sorta like my new HMO plan.
Three to five minutes of chuckling a day and I am good to go.
With the high cost of health care, the yucks from Mark Hayes book "RanDumb" is a bargain I strongly recommend.

One Fine Stooge: Larry Fine's Frizzy Life In Pictures Review

One Fine Stooge: Larry Fine's Frizzy Life In Pictures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From ROGUECINEMA.COM
"Back in the early 1970s, Larry Fine was the first stooge to come out with a biography. Some interesting photos were placed in a text that was rife with errors, both grammatical and historical. Few copies sold, it quietly left the market, and is now a bizarre and costly collector's item. Larry remained very unhappy with the project, and until his death in 1975, would gather material for a proposed new autobiography.
Film and television historian Steve Cox gained access to this material thru co-author Jim Terry, and for the past several years they worked to produce perhaps the definitive book on any of the Stooges' lives.
One Fine Stooge is indeed mostly about the quietly endearing man in the middle, but it includes a wealth of information about the Stooges and their careers on stage, in films, and on television not found in other biographies, including Moe Howard's 1977 autobiography, the rather ghastly biography of Curly published in the 1980s (which has a Foreword by Michael Jackson -- a real portent for the bizarre psycho babble that fills the rest of the text), and Joe Besser's thoughtful autobiography from that same period. This latest look at the Stooges is, quite frankly, the best biographical piece on them yet.
Rare photos (including a couple of interesting color shots from the Shemp years), are now placed in a text that is enlightening, informative, and revealing. Even the staunchest stoogephiles will be pleased with such information as the fact that Shemp actually went on stage in place of Curly for many dates as early as 1945 before officially replacing him in 1946, or that two of the most reviled Stooges comedies (Cuckoo on a Choo Choo and Sweet and Hot) were among Larry's favorites. It was disturbing, albeit fascinating, to read Larry's personal feelings about his partners, his troubled marriage to an alcoholic and abusive spouse, and the death of his son.
It is amazing to read quotes from Larry such as 'At first Curly was very sensitive and embarrassed about his crew cut hair. He would never take his cap off; however as soon as he got popular in movies, he was proud of his appearance and wouldn't keep his cap on so everyone would immediately recognize him.'
Recollections from celebrities from Frankie Avalon, to Bob Saget, to Penn Jillette add another interesting dimension.
One Fine Stooge is the perfect book on the trio. It contains a wealth of rare photos, the general information for fans who don't already know the team's history, and fascinating tidbits for those of us who have been Stoogephiles for decades. It has our most passionate recommendation."

One Fine Stooge, the life story of Larry Fine—the original frizzy-haired member of the classic comedy team—reveals the charming and poignant life of the famed comedian who took a beating for more than four decades. Behind the comic mask that he wore most of his adult years as a Stooge—on stage, in films, television, cartoons, and in every facet of entertainment—was a life filled with fame and fortune, but also with bad luck and tragedy. This tumultuous trip through decades in show business is based on Larry Fine's own memoirs, featuring the late comedian's private memorabilia collection—now published for the first time—providing an unparalleled visual history of the most prolific comedy team in entertainment annals.Like them or not, the Three Stooges are an institution of American comedy, popular icons of the greatest renown. This book feels like a reunion of old friends, telling their stories at a dinner party that you are fortunate ewnough to overhear.
There is so much history in the years of SNL that there is an anecdote for every fan, but this book recognizes Loren Michaels as being the true genius behind the creation and development of the show. He's not universally loved by the cast (but also not nearly as despised as Chevy Chase, who seems to beeveryone's favorite whipping boy), but his genius is acknowledged by one and all.
A lot of favorite skits and characters are discussed, as well as some legendary battles with censors, advertisers and network executives. The mix of radical comedy with revenue concious TV executives makes for fascinating reading.
The chapters dealing with the deaths of cast members and behind the scene staff members are incredibly poignant, especially Belushi's and Chris Farley's, bit of whom were known to be dancing with trouble.
This book also goes a long way to humanizing Chris Rock, who emerges as one of the most thoughtful and career minded members of all SNL casts. His intelligence shines through in his tales of making it by way of the show.
There is a great story on almost every page of this book, and having grown up with this show, it made the memories all the more pleasant.
This is a great Christmas present for any 30-50 year old who has spent their Saturday night in front of a TV.
