I purchased this book on Friday as a gift. The book happened to get passed around my office. My co workers were laughing hysterically as they were all reading excerpts from the book. I have never seen anything like it. The book is very funny and would make a great gift for someone who can use a laugh. I plan on buying another copy to give to my Dad on Fathers day. 2 thumbs up.

Hey, goomba! Are you on the Goomba Diet? Do you need to be?• Do they put up crime scene tape after you visit the buffet table?• Is the air freshener in your car a slice of provolone?Stop crying! The Goomba Diet is here—the dolce vita diet that shows you how to eat more, drink more, laugh more, live more, and feel great while you're doing it. The Goomba Diet offers sensible weight-loss tips for the guy who's gone too far:• Touch your toes. If this is difficult, pay a guy to do it for you.• Walk to court. It also offers helpful maintenance tips for the goomba who's the perfect weight and wants to stay that way:• Try an appetite suppressant. Try eating at Applebee's. • Pick up something heavy. Get a copy of The Da Vinci Code. • Cut out those carbs. Only eat pastas that end in the letter i. The Goomba Diet is the personal lifestyle guide from Steven R. Schirripa—Bobby "Bacala" Baccalieri from HBO's hit series The Sopranos and author of the bestseller A Goomba's Guide to Life. Developed over decades of dreaming about and then living the high life, it's a how-to guide for happy living—how to duke a maître d', how to order a good meal, how to be a good father, a good husband and a good friend, and how to behave at a wedding, a funeral, and on the job. You wanna have a good time? Follow these rules:• Do tip the maid. Don't tip the made guy. • Do tip the D.J. Don't tip the D.A.• Do tell the bride she's beautiful. Don't tell her she's hardly showing.• Do give your kids an allowance. Don't offer to "make it interesting" by shooting craps for double or nothing. The Goomba Diet is for everyone with an appetite for life, and for everyone who understands that the key to happiness isn't found in a smaller waistline but in a bigger heart. Like Steve says, "There's a lot of skinny actors wearing black turtlenecks and tending bar right now who'd kill for a part on The Sopranos. This fat goomba is doing all right for himself."So relax! Stop worrying about how much you're eating, and start worrying about how much you're enjoying it. Lose weight if you like—but live! Put a fork in your right hand, a hunk of bread in your left, and mangia like you mean it. HBO® and The Sopranos® are service marks of Time Warner Entertainment Company, L.P.From the Hardcover edition.

Icons of Talk: The Media Mouths That Changed America (Greenwood Icons) Review

Although the book sometimes reads like a textbook, I was impressed with its objectivity and conciseness. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Howard Stern, Johnny Carson, Dave Letterman, and Jay Leno. The book covers talkers from both radio and television and provides great insight to America's most influential broadcasters.
Highly recommended.

Americans love talk shows. In a typical week, more than 13 million Americans listen to Rush Limbaugh, whose syndicated radio show is carried by about 600 stations. On television, Oprah Winfrey's syndicated talk show is seen by an estimated 30 million viewers each week. Talk show hosts like Winfrey and Limbaugh have become iconic figures, frequently quoted and capable of inspiring intense opinions. What they say on the air is discussed around the water cooler at work, or commented about on blogs and fan web sites. Talk show hosts have helped to make or break political candidates, and their larger-than-life personalities have earned them millions of fans (as well as more than a few enemies). Icons of Talk highlights the most groundbreaking exemplars of the talk show genre, a genre that has had a profound influence on American life for over 70 years.

Going behind the scenes, this volume showcases the techniques hosts used to motivate (and sometimes aggravate) audiences, and examines the talk show in all of its various formats, including sports-talk, religious-talk, political-talk, and celebrity-talk. Each entry places the talk format and its hosts into historical context, addressing such questions as: What was going on in society when these talkers were on the air? How did each of them affect or change society? What were the issues they liked to talk about and what reaction did they get from listeners and from critics? How were talk hosts able to persuade people to vote for particular candidates or support certain policies? Which hosts were considered controversial and why? Complete with photographs, a timeline, and a resource guide of sources and organizations, this volume is ideal for students of journalism and media studies.

Explorer's Guide Palm Springs & Desert Resorts: A Great Destination (Explorer's Great Destinations) Review

Lively, objective, intelligent, and very helpful guidebook. I especially enjoyed Mr. Baker's survey of Palm Springs architecture, which inspired me to bike around to see some of the sights (love that midcentury modernism), and his description of local landscape & wildlife, which is at once factual and poetic. You need this info (about rattlesnakes, etc) if you're going to be hiking around! Book covers nearby towns if you must see them (they should be avoided altogether in my opinion). Was also helpful for a day trip to Joshua Tree National Monument.
I brought this book on a recent five-day vacation in Palm Springs, along with a couple others. If you must pick just one guide, this is your best bet.
