Frommer's Vancouver and Victoria 2010 (Frommer's Complete Guides) Review

I bought this guide to use during our one-week family vacation to Vancouver. While I read about various sites, restaurants and hotels, I have to agree with the previous reviewer who stated that there's not a lot in it that you won't find online. However, it would be very useful for those who travel to Vancouver over and again and want to dig deeper into places to go and eat and need to know more about public transportation, local things to do and so forth.
For the several-day visitor, here's my advice: stay downtown as it's walkable and there are lots of shops and restaurants that will keep your interest; plan to spend two days in and around Stanley Park (take the carriage ride, spend an afternoon in the Aquarium, hike around and find the totem poles); take the river launch over and eat lunch and walk around the Public Market out on Granville Island; take the Harbour Ferry tour around the Harbour; and, if it's raining, go to the horse races at Hastings Park. What a wonderful city!

Fodor's Philadelphia & the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, 16th Edition (Fodor's Gold Guides) Review

Fodor's guides use very few photos so they don't exactly inspire you to travel. However, this book is probably the most up-to-date guide book available on Philadelphia because the other brands of guidebooks do not update their material very often for this particular city. I don't know why most guide books on Philly feel the need to throw in Lancaster and Gettysburg. Those cities are quite far away from Philly and should be treated in their own guide books. Unfortunately, Philadelphia is practically the only part of Pennsylvania for which you can find a travel guide.
