(More customer reviews)The Long Weekenders City Guide series is designed to be easily read whilst in transit (ie on a bus, train or plain). The simple layout and largish(ish) font - certainly made this very easy to do. What I liked about this book was the fact that you could glean enough information about the main tourist sights, hotels, bars, restaurants, etc in one easy sitting and then refer back to it very quickly as needed when in the city. The insight into the local population is informative and at times humorous. I couldn't wait to taste Irn Bru. I'm heading back to Glasgow on business again soon and will certainly be packing this little book.

Frommer's London 2010 (Frommer's Color Complete) Review

(More customer reviews)My wife and I have been to London many times for both business and pleasure. Usually we make at least one trip a year at minimum. We have owned several different travel guides including older Frommers versions. This is probably the best Frommer's of the past few years due to the inclusion of more photo's but I would say if you are a veteran traveler to London this might not be as useful for you.
If you are a first timer to London this is a great guide. It will give you information on the major sites to see including useful information such as opening and closing times, costs, how to get to and from major tourist attractions and the best times to go. Overall this is a great guide for someone new to London who wants to see all the major sites. For you veterans there are probably better options.
One note. As others have mentioned there are several pages in this guide that actually are from the Paris guide. Check pages 281-296 as these are usually the pages which are actually for Paris. If you find this is the case just return your copy for a new one. Hopefully this has now been corrected.

Noel Coward: A Biography Review

(More customer reviews)Nearly eight years after its publication, and almost five since the (relatively) highly observed centenary of Noël Coward's birth, I'm amazed to see that I'm apparently the first person to review this biography on Amazon.com. When I first read it several years ago, I was struck by Hoare's thoroughness, his dispassion, and his wide-ranging research. While this book may not be flawless, it's certainly good enough, I believe, to be the current standard biography of the man.
Despite Coward's reputation as the quintessence of high-class sophistication and airy panache, Hoare shows how the man was shaped by his distinctly unglamorous childhood. His days as a hard-working child actor are thoroughly explored, as are his relationships with colleagues, lovers, competitors, and friends. While not prurient, Hoare clearly loves a good story, and doesn't mind dealing dish (as they say) on his subject when he has one to tell.
Though not really a devotee of theater generally, I am a fan of Coward's. Having read a few titles about the man, I don't hesitate to say this is the best of the lot. Whether you're a student of the man or a casual acquaintance who wants to know more about one of the outstanding talents of the last century, Philip Hoare's biography is a resource to read, enjoy, and keep close to hand.
