I was quite disappointed by this Frommer's, I have used their series on numerous trips abroad and have found them quite informative. Being from Montreal, I found the initial section on Quebec history and culture very inaccurate and biased against the French-speaking majority. Now I question the accuracy of all the cultural information I read in the other books I bought. I give it 4 stars for the section on what "to do" and 1 star on the section aiming at educating readers on the culture and history of the place they are going to visit. The books recommended will probably give the reader an even more negative view of the French majority, none of which are written by the latter.

In preparing for a trip to Montreal and Quebec, I was pleasantly surprised to find a book that covered both cities. It was easy to read and find specific information. The different maps were very helpful while walking around both cities -- although I used actual road maps for driving directions. Keeping in mind that having two cities means less information about each -- I found the information was the right amount to help us make important decisions or ask the right questions when we made reservations. It certainly will help you find the "must see" spots as it provides recommendations for a one-, two- or three-day visit. I often read the short description of a site aloud before we visited. We changed our hotel reservations based on the book. As a result, we saved $10 per night (which more than paid for the book) and got free meals for the children -- a huge savings over three days. Bottomline -- a good, easy-to-use book with valuable information -- especially for first or second time visitors.

This is a great guide for those who haven't yet been to Quebec City. It gives general information on the top sites, hotels and dining in the area. I would have liked to see, however, more dining options and a larger section on traveling to Quebec City with kids. Also, there is a whole vacation rental business in the city, mostly apartments, that is a great way to travel and less expensive than hotels. The guide never even mentions this option.

I purchased this book for a family driving vacation that started in Los Angeles- up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Fransisco and then to the Sequoia National Forest. We found the budget hotel suggestions to be very helpful and stayed in several that were listed and were very pleased. The restarant suggestions were not as helpful as it seemed most listed were the most expensive and exclusive in the cities- not an option with a family. We were dissapointed with the one nice resteraunt we chose out of this book. Overall the book seemed to be very up to date and having the addresses and phone numbers for attractions and facilities was very helpful. I would reccomend the book for someone like ourselves who has not visited CA previously

I have used this book annually as a resource when I am visiting Cape Cod. I have purchased other books similar, but always return to the latest Frommer's version. This is indeed, user friendly, accurate and provides the 'off the beaten path' type of things to do that one might easily miss. I would highly recommend this book over others. It's very user friendly and full of interesting tidbits.

This book had me more informed than some of the New Yorkers I spoke with during my trip. While on one of the double-decker tour buses, I was able to follow along with the easy to read map included with the book and garnered information about various sites that the tour guide did not even address!
The information about prices, hours of operation, hotels, and necessities was accurate and much appreciated by our group. My friends joked about my preparedness, but no one was sorry when we always knew where we were going, what it would cost to enter and how long we could stay. The tips about avoiding lines and how to get better deals were also very much appreciated!

Frommer's Australia 2007 (Frommer's Complete)
Average Reviews:

I purchased book a week before my trip and read on flight to Sydney. Soon determined there were a number of inaccuracies in the attraction pricing and other minor specifics (e.g., per Frommer there were 30 Explorer bus stops in Blue Mountain...there were actually 27, which Lonely Planet had right). The organization layout could be more simplistic (i.e., one attraction was discussed in various areas of the same section - used labeled flags to facilitate use). The book is bulky to carry around in backpack - editions should be available for specific regions (e.g., Sydney and surrounding). Worship service times and places could be added. Sydney is home to one of the most popular, largest non-denominational churches (Hillsong) and there was no mention of this (or other churches, other than the architecturally impressive cathedrals). Lastly, it would be great if Frommers would add local sites and activities. For instance, there is mention of the Sydney fish market but I found out through a local that cooking classes are offered. That would have been a fun "local" activity to have known about. I will buy the competitor book on my next trip and will then place my loyalty on one.

Frommer's Chicago 2007 (Frommer's Complete)

Frommer's Chicago 2007 was useful in our recent trip. The tear-out map is excellent. We already had hotel reservations so didn't need the book for finding a place to stay, but the book was very valuable in finding eating establishments, and knowing in advance what price to expect. We recommend the Russian Tea Time, Heaven on Seven, and Giordano's. For a big night out, try Arun's - probably the best Thai food you'll ever have, and expect to pay $100 -$150 per person. Grab a hot dog at Portillo's, or let the vintage clothing-clad waiters put you down (for good clean fun) at Ed Debevic's. Come to think of it, although the book is good, our vacation was perfect - just try our eating choices, visit the Field Museum and the Art Institute, take the el out to Oak Park to tour the Frank Lloyd Wright home and other houses he designed, and spend some time playing on the Navy Pier. Take in a few shows in the evenings and have a great time!

Frommer's Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard 2009 (Frommer's Complete) Review

Frommer's Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard 2009 (Frommer's Complete)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Travel guides to an area as rich in lore and attractions as Cape Cod are bound to be highly subjective and cursory, but FROMMER'S GUIDE TO CAPE COD, NANTUCKET & MARTHA'S VINEYARD (authored by Laura M. Reckford) does a remarkable job hitting the highlights. The lodging and restaurant suggestions are minimal, but there are a lot of decent places at which to sleep and dine out there and the compilers have limited space in which to make recommendations from among them all. We were very happy with the FROMMER recommendations we sampled (e.g., Colombo's Café, p. 126; Moby Dick's, p. 197). My spouse would have preferred more pictures (there are only nine or ten pages of photos), but I was quite happy to have the guide be mainly text and maps. The suggested itineraries, based on length of stay and particular interests were very helpful.
Here are some additional, somewhat random notes on the book based on our experiences: By all means, rent bicycles in Falmouth and ride the Shining Sea Bikeway to Woods Hole (p. 96). Even if you're not big into cycling--my family wasn't, but now we might be!--you'll find it an easy and enjoyable ride. Woods Hole's OceanQuest, a 90-minute marine science-oriented boat ride aimed at families is worthwhile, but it's best enjoyed by the 9-13-year old set and their parents (p. 89). Younger children may feel left out, despite the crew's best intentions. Even if you're staying in Barnstable/Hyannis, you might want to take the state-run Martha's Vineyard ferry from Woods Hole where it's only $7.50 for adults, takes only a half-hour, and has multiple departures; a private ferry departing from Hyannis costs over twice as much (more than the book states), takes over three times as long, and has only one departure per day (at time of publication, the ferry had three departures) (pp. 255-256).
FROMMER'S recommendation of Sandy Neck Beach for families was spot on (p. 79), but the site a bit difficult to find. The beach is not marked by signage on Rte. 6A; point your GPS to Sandy Neck Road, then follow the road to its end. The guidebook laments the commercialization of the strip between Hyannis and Harwich Port ("unbridled development run amok," p. 130), but if you have a family and want to play mini-golf, that'll be your destination. In South Yarmouth, you can find a really decent Chinese-Vietnamese restaurant, Thuan Loi, at 1300 Main Street (Rte. 28).
We took up FROMMER'S suggestion for whale watching (the Dolphin Fleet, p. 209) and seal watching (The Beachcomber, p. 166) and were very happy. The whale experience was enhanced by being guided by a marine biologist, and we were treated to the sight of over a dozen whales. The Beachcomber experience had less scientific heft, but we were able to get close to dozens and dozens of seals (even in August). (For the seal adventure, be sure to go at low tide.) From the boat you also get a good view of Chatham, Chatham Light, numerous catboats, and nesting ospreys. For surely the best pizza on the Cape, Italian style, visit Sweet Tomatoes Neopolitan Pizza, located cater-corner from The Beachcomber office at 508 Crowell Road. Before leaving Chatham, be sure to make your way to the town center and walk Main Street for some interesting art, jewelry, candy, gewgaws, and book shops.
As for moderately priced lodging, we stayed at the Anchor Inn on Lewis Bay in Hyannis (1 South Street). The rooms were immaculate, the staff helpful and friendly, and the continental breakfast superb. You can walk to the Nantucket ferry from Anchor Inn. It's not so convenient to Main Street, though it's but a short 5-minute car ride away. We found Hyannis's central location amenable to trips around the Cape.
Finally, a shout out for Parnassus Books in Yarmouth Port (p. 133). Though maddeningly disorganized, once you've accepted the situation, you'll love the treasure hunting. The proprietor, described by FROMMER'S as "gruff," is a self-confessed "eccentric" whom we found quick to laugh and playfully tease my ten-year old--as well as some visiting Republicans.

Frommer's Ireland 2002 Review

Frommer's Ireland 2002
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My family used Frommer's Ireland 12th Ed. extensively before, during ,and after our trip to Ireland in July of 2002. The first two chapters Best of..., and Planning your Trip... were worth the purchase price alone. All of the Best of tips we followed were excellent choices.
The large fold out map that was included served very well during our driving tour of Ireland. Using the county and town maps that were included in the local sections kept us right on track. Distances are deceptive however. It takes longer to get anywhere you go than it would appear from reading the map. The Irish road system is not built for speed ( nor comfort for that matter) so plan accordingly. It takes a long time to drive across the country, or from county to county. More could have been made of this issue in the guide. Our biggest mistake was trying to do too much.
The up to date information on Dublin was very helpful, as were the frequent tips throughout the guide on ways to avoid the summer crowds. I used the web addresses that were included for lodging and found them very helpful for checking availability and booking our rooms quickly. Don't go without it!

I am a definite researcher. Seems that lately travel guide books have become a little obselete for there are so many sites online to find all the info you need. I am going to New York City in March as a birthday treat to stay in Times Square and see many shows. I don't live far, will be coming from Boston. I did much research on the area online for hotels, restaurants, sightseeing with some from frommers.com. But I want this trip to be as great as possible so I splurged and got the actual Frommers travel book.
I am so glad I did. This 408 page volume is filled to the brim with well researched, detailed information for anything you may need. I found all the info i needed for Times Square plus taxi costs from the airport, amounts to tip various workers etc. - all things I needed to know. The book is so detailed not only on the biggest tourist areas but on the entire city and gets you very excited to explore different areas of this multifaceted city. I have extended my stay to be able to really feel all areas of the city.
The author gives you restaurant listings, hotel listings and sightseeing suggestions for all city sections in all price ranges and interests. For each area a map is provided showing where all the places are located. There is also one huge foldout map included in the book. I must say I found this book priceless with all its up to date info. And the opinions are very honest withe the reasons backing the opinion. This helps me with making my decisions. I also give huge kudos to Frommers for they suggest throughout the book to use frommers.com and other online sites for further information. This is definitelty a guide whose purpose is to give you the most info possible.
This book is an essential, honest information filled volume that is a necessity to read before and to have during your trip to one of the most famous cities in the world. Highly recommended.

Because we have never been to Seattle, I wanted to gather as much information as I could on the "must see" attractions before our trip. This guide includes a walking tour of Pikes Place Market we intend to follow...probably would not have known about the gum wall within the market if I had not read this suggested tour. I thought it was very informative & I have referred back to it several times as I map out our itinerary. I believe our trip will be more enjoyable because of the information provided within the pages of this book. I plan to take the guide with us for unbiased reference on our adventure.

I had visited Boston once before a decade and a half ago, but this time I had three children in tow. I wanted to make sure that we paced ourselves for the three days that we were there, and the book allowed me to do so. I was able to pick activities that the kids would like--including the Freedom Trail, a short 1-hour cruise to the USS Constitution, and Fenway Park. Frommer's has an excellent Freedom Trail section that you will want to keep your finger in as you walk along site by site. There were many excellent suggestions the book made about a number of things, including a short (positive) review about our hotel (the Midtown Hotel, which we were extremely pleased with in regards to location and price). Except for being wrong on some of the admission prices to some of the sites--just a buck or two--the book was fairly accurate in everything else we looked up, which I thought was pretty impressive. In addition, I recommend picking up an Entertainment book for your city--they're only $10 after the spring--as we used food and entertainment coupons in Boston that saved us more than $100. Two-fer-ones and excellent discounted fares made it more bearable to do a few extras, especially for us on a limited budget. Whether or not you've been to Boston before, I highly recommend Frommer's for getting around with the best possible information at your fingertips.
