(More customer reviews)I was quite disappointed by this Frommer's, I have used their series on numerous trips abroad and have found them quite informative. Being from Montreal, I found the initial section on Quebec history and culture very inaccurate and biased against the French-speaking majority. Now I question the accuracy of all the cultural information I read in the other books I bought. I give it 4 stars for the section on what "to do" and 1 star on the section aiming at educating readers on the culture and history of the place they are going to visit. The books recommended will probably give the reader an even more negative view of the French majority, none of which are written by the latter.

(More customer reviews)In preparing for a trip to Montreal and Quebec, I was pleasantly surprised to find a book that covered both cities. It was easy to read and find specific information. The different maps were very helpful while walking around both cities -- although I used actual road maps for driving directions. Keeping in mind that having two cities means less information about each -- I found the information was the right amount to help us make important decisions or ask the right questions when we made reservations. It certainly will help you find the "must see" spots as it provides recommendations for a one-, two- or three-day visit. I often read the short description of a site aloud before we visited. We changed our hotel reservations based on the book. As a result, we saved $10 per night (which more than paid for the book) and got free meals for the children -- a huge savings over three days. Bottomline -- a good, easy-to-use book with valuable information -- especially for first or second time visitors.

(More customer reviews)I tried a few recommendations from Frommers and a few from local Chicago residents. I found the book's suggestions were more accurate that the residents'!
Frommer's isn't shy about giving opinions about places (e.g. "all the restaurants in Greektown are about the same") whereas Lonely Planet & other books tend to sound objective for their restaurant reviews & end up giving the traveler no guidance at all. Beware to call all the places you want to visit though. Even though my Frommers Chicago book is current (2004), I came across 1 restaurant in the book that already closed down, and found hours to the Art Institute had already changed.

(More customer reviews)This is a great guide for those who haven't yet been to Quebec City. It gives general information on the top sites, hotels and dining in the area. I would have liked to see, however, more dining options and a larger section on traveling to Quebec City with kids. Also, there is a whole vacation rental business in the city, mostly apartments, that is a great way to travel and less expensive than hotels. The guide never even mentions this option.

(More customer reviews)Bought this book along with Fodor's 05 New York City Guide and New York Eyewitness Travel Guide for our trip to New York in August. Overall this was the least informative book. The biggest problem is that the book mainly focuses on where to eat and where to stay, not what to see. If you want a book that details sights better, I would pick Fodor's 05 New York City Guide. I carried the book with me almost every day in New York, while the Frommer's guide was left in the hotel room to press flowers from the botanical garden.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this book for a family driving vacation that started in Los Angeles- up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Fransisco and then to the Sequoia National Forest. We found the budget hotel suggestions to be very helpful and stayed in several that were listed and were very pleased. The restarant suggestions were not as helpful as it seemed most listed were the most expensive and exclusive in the cities- not an option with a family. We were dissapointed with the one nice resteraunt we chose out of this book. Overall the book seemed to be very up to date and having the addresses and phone numbers for attractions and facilities was very helpful. I would reccomend the book for someone like ourselves who has not visited CA previously

(More customer reviews)This book had me more informed than some of the New Yorkers I spoke with during my trip. While on one of the double-decker tour buses, I was able to follow along with the easy to read map included with the book and garnered information about various sites that the tour guide did not even address!
The information about prices, hours of operation, hotels, and necessities was accurate and much appreciated by our group. My friends joked about my preparedness, but no one was sorry when we always knew where we were going, what it would cost to enter and how long we could stay. The tips about avoiding lines and how to get better deals were also very much appreciated!

Frommer pointed out some sights and activities we would have missed: beach festivals, Santa Catalina Island, etc. The guide also points out the best way to get to the attractions and how to appreciate them with a minimum of hassle. My wife enjoys gourmet food, so the restaurant reviews highlighted the tastiest places to eat, too.

(More customer reviews)Frommer's Chicago 2007 was useful in our recent trip. The tear-out map is excellent. We already had hotel reservations so didn't need the book for finding a place to stay, but the book was very valuable in finding eating establishments, and knowing in advance what price to expect. We recommend the Russian Tea Time, Heaven on Seven, and Giordano's. For a big night out, try Arun's - probably the best Thai food you'll ever have, and expect to pay $100 -$150 per person. Grab a hot dog at Portillo's, or let the vintage clothing-clad waiters put you down (for good clean fun) at Ed Debevic's. Come to think of it, although the book is good, our vacation was perfect - just try our eating choices, visit the Field Museum and the Art Institute, take the el out to Oak Park to tour the Frank Lloyd Wright home and other houses he designed, and spend some time playing on the Navy Pier. Take in a few shows in the evenings and have a great time!

The First was the Discovery Channel's Insight Guide, which proved to be more history and color photos than travel advice. Frommer's is known for their "opinionated" and "honest" reviews of travel destinations. We'll this one is no exception.
The book is laced with sarcastic tones and comments about the looks and feel of the casinos' and attractions in Vegas. The information is very personal and honest, to a point. The author Mary Herczog, is very opinionated about the feel of the places she visits. In a good sense, she lets you know about the space and attractiveness of each hotel and the feel of being there. But these are merely her opinions. Some of the places she finds distasteful and tacky, you might say magnificent! But never the less the whole book is very helpful in planning a trip to Las Vegas if you have never been before. Read again. Is helpful if you have never been to Las Vegas. Otherwise, you should have visited most of the major casino's there and decided for youself.
The book is more of a Encylopedia of Las Vegas, you pay for the organization of information. Very well written, but very steep in bias. Note to Fellow MEN: This book is written from the perspective of a WOMAN(No Offense). A smokey, crowded and noisey casino to Mary Herczog might be heaven to some of us Male Wager-Holics.
Overall the book is fun to read, informative, helpful in organizing addresses and phone numbers, insightful and interesting. Very opinionated, but good. Hope this helps.

(More customer reviews)The included map was great to use. The suggested activities also were good. Suggestions for using the extensive transportation system were also good. The guide book neglected to mention that the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen garden in Vancouver has a free section to the park and a section that charges admission. Also, between Chinatown and Gastown is the drug-ridden section, which the book mentioned, but it didn't tell us exactly which street, so we ended up on that street anyway. Overall, it was a good guide book.

I visited the local bookstore and took every book on Arizona off the shelf and looked at them all and chose this book because it had what I considered the best overall layout and approach. It turned out to be an **excellent** guide for our week-long Arizona trip. The book provides just enough information on each area as well as suggested drives and activities. I found it to be extremely helpful. Unlike other guidebooks, this one has a personality shining through. There's a person behind the information---you'll find language like 'this is my favorite..." or "...is why I like this ..." Some of the descriptive passages are very well-written. The information was timely and helpful, too. We constantly referred to it and felt very good about our choice of guidebooks. It was so helpful, I made a mental note to go back and write this review...
