(More customer reviews)I'm going to Vegas for the first time very soon, and I admit, I had high expectations of this book. Maybe too high, because the book fell well short of what I was expecting.
First off, it was published in 2000, when the world as a whole was a very different place, not to mention all the changes to Las Vegas since then. Next, yes, it does give very in-depth descriptions of the hotels it covers (which is really only those on the Strip), and the dining options in them. But if you're a Vegas virgin trying to decide where in Vegas to stay based on this book, you'll have a tough time, since all the hotels are comfortable, luxurious, and tastefully decorated, and all the dining is top-rated and cutting edge. As for attractions, those attached to the Strip hotels are given a decent enough description, but the free-standing places are pretty much given just a quick once over.
If you're web-savvy at all, there's no information here that you couldn't get yourself -- and what you'd find online would probably be much more current. If you just HAVE to have a Vegas guidebook, go with "The Unofficial Guide to Vegas." That book is everything I was hoping this one would be.

Frommer's London 2010 (Frommer's Color Complete) Review

(More customer reviews)My wife and I have been to London many times for both business and pleasure. Usually we make at least one trip a year at minimum. We have owned several different travel guides including older Frommers versions. This is probably the best Frommer's of the past few years due to the inclusion of more photo's but I would say if you are a veteran traveler to London this might not be as useful for you.
If you are a first timer to London this is a great guide. It will give you information on the major sites to see including useful information such as opening and closing times, costs, how to get to and from major tourist attractions and the best times to go. Overall this is a great guide for someone new to London who wants to see all the major sites. For you veterans there are probably better options.
One note. As others have mentioned there are several pages in this guide that actually are from the Paris guide. Check pages 281-296 as these are usually the pages which are actually for Paris. If you find this is the case just return your copy for a new one. Hopefully this has now been corrected.

Riot On Sunset Strip Review

It's amazing how many music styles melded on one stretch of road in one city during just a two-year period! This is not an ordinary road but the main one - Sunset Strip (actually Sunset Boulvard) - and not just any city. It's HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA!
Sure there were hard rock bands - the image you get from both the title and the cover photo of this fascinating book - but there were also the Beach Boys, The Mamas and Papas, Petula Clark and lots of small comedy and folk clubs. This was the music I gravitated to during 1965 and 1966 and I found lots to reminisce about on as I read and looked through this book. Of particular interest to me was the section on Teen TV shows which emanated from the LA scene. Though, growing up in the Philadelphia area, I was more of an American Bandstand viewer, we did get Lloyd Thaxton in the afternoon and, of course, Shindig! in the evening. Then there was the T.A.M.I. Show film - which still has never been legitimately been released on home video - and it was filmed there. Fiore devotes a large section to this and I learned things we "kids" on the East Coast never knew. Just looking at the picture, and reading the captions, was an experience.
I can certainly recommend this - as a memory jogger - to anyone who was a teen in 1965-66 and it'll definitely be a must for anyone who watch Rock and Roll television in Southern California in the 1960s.

Frommer's Vancouver and Victoria 2010 (Frommer's Complete Guides) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this guide to use during our one-week family vacation to Vancouver. While I read about various sites, restaurants and hotels, I have to agree with the previous reviewer who stated that there's not a lot in it that you won't find online. However, it would be very useful for those who travel to Vancouver over and again and want to dig deeper into places to go and eat and need to know more about public transportation, local things to do and so forth.
For the several-day visitor, here's my advice: stay downtown as it's walkable and there are lots of shops and restaurants that will keep your interest; plan to spend two days in and around Stanley Park (take the carriage ride, spend an afternoon in the Aquarium, hike around and find the totem poles); take the river launch over and eat lunch and walk around the Public Market out on Granville Island; take the Harbour Ferry tour around the Harbour; and, if it's raining, go to the horse races at Hastings Park. What a wonderful city!

Waterman Gray manages to capture the essence of the Sunflower State in a conversational voice that takes you from museum to restaurant to diner to historic sites with interesting facts, trivia and the ease of a seasoned travel guide. The day after purchasing the book, I used it while driving through the Flint Hills and it without a doubt enhanced my experience. It's a terrific gift book, too, for former Kansas residents living outside the state. The photos are great and the mouthwatering descriptions of food found throughout Kansas are an added culinary bonus--Waterman Gray is a well-known food writer, in addition to penning stories about travel throughout the country.
