The 2008 edition of "The Rough Guide to Britain" is the definitive planning guide for those intending a vacation that takes in England, Wales, and Scotland (Ireland, including Northern Ireland, is covered in a separate Rough Guide). In a compact 1,000 page format, this Rough Guide offers choices and lots of them, along with information on when and how to get there.
Britain has much to entertain the visitor, from cosmopolitan London to cathedral towns and grand homes to the wilderness areas of northern Scotland and central Wales. Several thousand years of well-preserved history are on display in a variety of museums, while the major cities offer the lastest in culture and shopping. There is something for almost everyone.
"The Rough Guide to Britain" breaks out its coverage of England, Wales, and Scotland by geographic regions. Each regional chapter points out the touring highlights and the practicalities of dining and lodging. The text is buttressed by graphic maps, black and white photos, and short articles on special items of interest. Color inserts in the Guide focus on items of general interest such as Britain's coastal areas, its literary heritage, and unique festivals worth a look. The Guide has the usual maps of Britain, climatology charts, and the practical details of arriving in and traveling around Britain.
"The Rough Guide to Britain" is very highly recommended to those planning a vacation in Great Britain. This guide, along with appropriate driving maps, may be the only resources needed for an excellent visit.

Frommer's Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard 2009 (Frommer's Complete) Review

Frommer's Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard 2009 (Frommer's Complete)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Travel guides to an area as rich in lore and attractions as Cape Cod are bound to be highly subjective and cursory, but FROMMER'S GUIDE TO CAPE COD, NANTUCKET & MARTHA'S VINEYARD (authored by Laura M. Reckford) does a remarkable job hitting the highlights. The lodging and restaurant suggestions are minimal, but there are a lot of decent places at which to sleep and dine out there and the compilers have limited space in which to make recommendations from among them all. We were very happy with the FROMMER recommendations we sampled (e.g., Colombo's Café, p. 126; Moby Dick's, p. 197). My spouse would have preferred more pictures (there are only nine or ten pages of photos), but I was quite happy to have the guide be mainly text and maps. The suggested itineraries, based on length of stay and particular interests were very helpful.
Here are some additional, somewhat random notes on the book based on our experiences: By all means, rent bicycles in Falmouth and ride the Shining Sea Bikeway to Woods Hole (p. 96). Even if you're not big into cycling--my family wasn't, but now we might be!--you'll find it an easy and enjoyable ride. Woods Hole's OceanQuest, a 90-minute marine science-oriented boat ride aimed at families is worthwhile, but it's best enjoyed by the 9-13-year old set and their parents (p. 89). Younger children may feel left out, despite the crew's best intentions. Even if you're staying in Barnstable/Hyannis, you might want to take the state-run Martha's Vineyard ferry from Woods Hole where it's only $7.50 for adults, takes only a half-hour, and has multiple departures; a private ferry departing from Hyannis costs over twice as much (more than the book states), takes over three times as long, and has only one departure per day (at time of publication, the ferry had three departures) (pp. 255-256).
FROMMER'S recommendation of Sandy Neck Beach for families was spot on (p. 79), but the site a bit difficult to find. The beach is not marked by signage on Rte. 6A; point your GPS to Sandy Neck Road, then follow the road to its end. The guidebook laments the commercialization of the strip between Hyannis and Harwich Port ("unbridled development run amok," p. 130), but if you have a family and want to play mini-golf, that'll be your destination. In South Yarmouth, you can find a really decent Chinese-Vietnamese restaurant, Thuan Loi, at 1300 Main Street (Rte. 28).
We took up FROMMER'S suggestion for whale watching (the Dolphin Fleet, p. 209) and seal watching (The Beachcomber, p. 166) and were very happy. The whale experience was enhanced by being guided by a marine biologist, and we were treated to the sight of over a dozen whales. The Beachcomber experience had less scientific heft, but we were able to get close to dozens and dozens of seals (even in August). (For the seal adventure, be sure to go at low tide.) From the boat you also get a good view of Chatham, Chatham Light, numerous catboats, and nesting ospreys. For surely the best pizza on the Cape, Italian style, visit Sweet Tomatoes Neopolitan Pizza, located cater-corner from The Beachcomber office at 508 Crowell Road. Before leaving Chatham, be sure to make your way to the town center and walk Main Street for some interesting art, jewelry, candy, gewgaws, and book shops.
As for moderately priced lodging, we stayed at the Anchor Inn on Lewis Bay in Hyannis (1 South Street). The rooms were immaculate, the staff helpful and friendly, and the continental breakfast superb. You can walk to the Nantucket ferry from Anchor Inn. It's not so convenient to Main Street, though it's but a short 5-minute car ride away. We found Hyannis's central location amenable to trips around the Cape.
Finally, a shout out for Parnassus Books in Yarmouth Port (p. 133). Though maddeningly disorganized, once you've accepted the situation, you'll love the treasure hunting. The proprietor, described by FROMMER'S as "gruff," is a self-confessed "eccentric" whom we found quick to laugh and playfully tease my ten-year old--as well as some visiting Republicans.

Here's the Deal: Don't Touch Me Review

Here's the Deal: Don't Touch Me
Average Reviews:

Howie Mandel (that's one "l" not two,) has been one of the funniest comedians to come around in over two decades. In this personal biography, Mandel entails his funniest moments throughout his professional, as well as his personal life. Mandel struggles on a daily basis with his diagnosed "OCD" and "HDHD," but he has the unique ability to find humor in the very uncomfortable situations that only he can.
Halfway through the book, the reader feels as though he knows Mandel on a personal level. The stories that he relates as a young man trying to find himself are both sincere and gut wrenchingly hysterical. The man sure knows how to spin a yarn, and we the reader are fortunate for it.
The book chronicles his career from being a young boy, until being a huge commercial success with the popular game show "Deal or no Deal," and his hidden camera show, "Howie Do It." If you don't laugh out loud reading this memoir, then you do not know what funny is.

Another terrific Frommer guide. Things are organized the way you plan a vacation. Looking for accommodations? They are all in one place for each island (grouped by location). Same with meals, activities, etc. I especially appreciate the honest descriptions and opinions of each property. If it's run down, the author says so. That's the type of information I need. I can get simple descriptive info (like other guidebooks) from the tourist bureau. I want to know what stuff is REALLY like and this book tells me.

Paul Krassner is an American satirist whose observations have won him awards from as unlikely a contrasting set of resources as Playboy and the Feminist Party Media Workshop. His controversial satirical observations have won him acclaim and condemnation around the world, and he's been described by the FBI as a 'raving nut'. ONE HAND JERKING: REPORTS FROM AN INVESTIGATIVE SATIRIST offers up the best of his sometimes-indecent exposures, tackling subjects from international politics to social concerns with a deadly eye for irony and an occasional Lenny-Bruce-style shocker. Highly recommended for any tired of the usual boring social commentary.

Frommer's Bahamas 2008 (Frommer's Complete)
Average Reviews:

The Bahamas are generally mistreated by guide book companies. The Open Road Guidebook is almost four times shorter then that on Tahiti, while the Rough guide is much shorter then that on Jamaica. Guidebooks tend to treat the Bahamas as a place where you rest, drink & dive. Very little background info and almost nothing about the Out Islands. Lonely Planet had by far the best book, but then with the new format in 2005 came a very poor and short edition, so LP has definitely lost that title. Now IMHO Frommer's is the best. Closely followed by Fodor's. They have the normal info for package tour guys, but they also have some interesting background reading. And all of it is in good proportions, unlike the Insight Guide which has a stunning amount of background reading but very little practical info.

I love Wanda Sykes, but unfortunately her humor doesn't translate very well in print. What makes Wanda Sykes really shine is her delivery, and without her body language, whiny voice, semi-ghetto/Ebonics talk and impeccable timing, the jokes just don't have the same effects.
This is still worth a read (especially since it's such a quick/easy read), I think I'd rather re-rent her hilarious DVD, "Tongue Untied" again.

Redneck Nation: How the South Really Won the War Review

Redneck Nation: How the South Really Won the War
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved this book! Michael Graham skewers everyone from radical feminists to radical Christians to radical NASCAR fans (and lots of folks in between) with his razor sharp wit.
I don't know if the South can really be held responsible for all the wacky things going on in this country today. Maybe we can just chalk some of it up to basic human stupidty. But if you've ever felt a little queasy while listening to someone talk about last night's "Survivor" episode...if you've ever wondered how educated adults can gaze upon an art masterpiece and be offended...or if you've ever despaired over the darker side of human nature that gives us racism and all other manners of intolerance, you'll enjoy this read.
In spite of the comic presentation, a book like this should make us take a hard look at ourselves and say "I'm going to stop this idiotic behavior." We all know that's not going to happen, but if Mr. Graham's points are completely lost on you, then in the immortal words of Jeff Foxworthy, you might be a redneck!

Frommer's Ireland 2002 Review

Frommer's Ireland 2002
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My family used Frommer's Ireland 12th Ed. extensively before, during ,and after our trip to Ireland in July of 2002. The first two chapters Best of..., and Planning your Trip... were worth the purchase price alone. All of the Best of tips we followed were excellent choices.
The large fold out map that was included served very well during our driving tour of Ireland. Using the county and town maps that were included in the local sections kept us right on track. Distances are deceptive however. It takes longer to get anywhere you go than it would appear from reading the map. The Irish road system is not built for speed ( nor comfort for that matter) so plan accordingly. It takes a long time to drive across the country, or from county to county. More could have been made of this issue in the guide. Our biggest mistake was trying to do too much.
The up to date information on Dublin was very helpful, as were the frequent tips throughout the guide on ways to avoid the summer crowds. I used the web addresses that were included for lodging and found them very helpful for checking availability and booking our rooms quickly. Don't go without it!

Kiss Me Quick Before I Shoot Review

Kiss Me Quick Before I Shoot
Average Reviews:

Everybody likes a feel-good story and characters that they can relate to and root for. In KISS ME QUICK BEFORE I SHOOT filmmaker Guy Magar becomes that person as he shares his own personal journey and how we was able to bring other worlds to life through the big screen.
There is something to be said about someone who is self-made. They are not just relatable but an example of what all of us can do and should reach for. Throughout the book we see Magar being able to deal with these larger-than-life situations and still allow his humanity and decency to come through.
There are even the personal slivers of his life that he reveals to us: how his mortality and that of his wife were both not only brought to the forefront but allowed them to see that just like in the movies things can quick change.
I read KISS ME QUICK BEFORE I SHOOT with a sense of reflection on wthe different milestones that I have been privileged enough to reach and how important it is for us to all take the time to appreciate the things that are important. Failure to do so will mean that we might see ourselves excel in a profession way yet who we are as a person might begin to appear unclear.

Kiss Me Quick Before I Shoot is a memoir about magic...the kind that permeates the air every time I call 'Action,' every time I'm in an editing room, every time I'm working with a composer on a film score. For me, there is no more magical a career endeavor than making films. Movie lovers will discover what it would be like to work in the dream factory, to be a film director, to have an inside peek at Hollywood s inner workings making movies and TV shows. This memoir brings to life the many personalities and stars encountered, and tells the hilarious stories behind the stories on the rocky road to Hollywood success. With production work spanning over 100 credits from docs to shorts to TV shows to feature films, Guy Magar s behind-the-scenes stories range from his first producer turning out to be a Mafia assassin, to shooting in Egypt for the original series Battlestar Galactica, to directing a grunting Mr. T on The A-Team, to almost decapitating a young Drew Barrymore, and to almost derailing James Cameron s career (or slowing it down as he proved way too talented for anyone to alter his storied destiny.) This memoir is about living the great American dream, an immigrant s dream to make movies in Hollywood. Kiss me quick before I shoot has been my welcoming catchphrase to my wife Jacqui whenever she visited on-set, seemingly always just before I rolled cameras. And so this book is also about a deeper magic, the magic of finding a life partner. Love begins when you meet a kind heart, a kind soul, and blossoms into caring for that person more than for yourself. Jacqui and I were married in a memorable and beautifully costumed Renaissance-themed wedding. I got to duel in a sword fight to win her hand against hooligans (stuntmen friends) who kidnapped her after she arrived by horse and buggy in front of 300 surprised guests. It was a magical wedding. It was my Errol Flynn life moment! Now, 28 years later, I am still head-over-heels in love with Jacqui. But then, suddenly, Black Monday hit: Jacqui was diagnosed with leukemia. I immediately moved into the role of caregiver, and my entire 24-hour life focus became Jacqui s healing. We discovered the healing mecca of the City of Hope in Duarte, California. There we met a world-class gifted doctor who welcomed Jacqui to join their national trial. We locked up our house, boarded the dog, and moved in to start Jacqui s curative journey back to health. DARE TO DREAM! As an immigrant with Hollywood dreams to become a director and I did...I dreamed of finding true love and I did at 34...and when Jacqui got ill, I dreamed we would find a way to heal her, and we did. People love stories about making dreams come true. I dared to dream! This passionate, life-celebrating memoir embraces both love and work within a spectrum of entertaining stories of what it s like to live this dream. Join me on a wild and thrilling rollercoaster ride of a Hollywood film career, of the intoxicating highs of finding and sharing true love, and of the sweet triumph of survival and healing.

The Rough Guide to Melbourne Review

The Rough Guide to Melbourne
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted a guidebook to take on my Oct 2010 trip to Melbourne, but I really could not find one that I liked. I settled on this one. It contains all the basic travel info (electrical current, etc.), short history and major sites as any other guidebooks, but not much beyond. The listings for restaurants, bars/pubs & live music are pretty limited, and the full color insert on "eclectic multicultural cuisine" was short and don't add much more than a few pretty pictures. It does offer good coverage of major attractions around Melbourne proper like museums, the gaol, the state library, etc. However, while the book covers Southern suburbs like Toorak & Prahran and as far down South as St Kilda, it only goes as far North as Carlton & Fitzroy, completely omitting North Melbourne, Brunswick & anything beyond.
It does cover some areas outside of Melbourne like the Great Ocean Road and the Yarra Valley, but someone like me who intended on spending most of my time really getting to know & soaking in the life of the city, I thought this book does so at the expense of giving a more in-depth details of Melbourne itself.
The book is split up into sections for different parts of the city with a map of the area at the start of each section. But I was disappointed that the map of the larger Melbourne area at the beginning of the book do not cover enough area so that I had to keep flipping between the various maps in the book to figure out where I am & where I'm supposed to go.
Overall, I didn't like this guidebook much. It's serviceable, but I would have loved to see more tidbits on the culture, cuisine and music scene mentioned in the product description. This book really doesn't delve into any of them more than a few sentences. I did enjoy the section in the back that list some notable Australian books & movies (some of which I did check out prior to my trip), but overall I didn't think it offers much to set it apart from most other city guidebooks.

Sliding Into Home Review

I'm going to be like many, perhaps most, of the readers of this book. I got hooked on The Girls Next Door TV series(GND), and that ultimately led me to Kendra's memoir. First, the good stuff. This is a pretty brave book; it's not full of fluff, simply feeding off of GND notoriety. Kendra opened her mental closet and let some of the dark goolies out; not everybody would be that willing to share their past lives to the extent that she has in this book. This is one of the strengths of the book. Additionally, her memoir is interesting for those who are curious about her behind the scenes relationship with Hugh Hefner, Bridget and Holly, as well as other members of the Playboy Mansion staff. There is a fair amount of information and discussion about the people, behind the scenes realities, and routine life during her 4+ years in residence. I am not going to spoil the read by commenting specifically about Kendra's references concerning sex; however, everyone knows that the Playboy Mansion is about sex. Sliding into Home does not ignore this. The author handles this with some common sense and maturity, but she gets the infomation into the book.
The book could have been improved by additional detail. Kendra participated in many trips within the GND series. It would have been very interesting to read about the behind the scenes preparations and activies during more of the various trips. More detail about the workings of the Mansion to include a number of the people involved as well as the commercial side of making GND would have made good reading.
Overall this is a good book. It has an honest feel to it, and is, to date, the best book that has come out of the modern Playboy Mansion/Girls Next Door genre. It is highly readable and hard to put down.

KENDRA BARES ALLFans of the E! smash hit series The Girls Next Door fell in love with sporty Playboy beauty Kendra Wilkinson's care- free spirit, infectious laugh, and down-to-earth nature. Now that she's moved out of the world's most famous bachelor pad and into her own delightfully chaotic world on Kendra as wife to NFL star Hank Baskett and mother to their newborn son, we've watched her hilarious antics as she adjusts to domestic life. But how much do we really know about the fun-loving star? In this humorous and optimistic, sometimes heartbreaking, but always unfailingly honest memoir, Kendra reveals the highs and lows of her extraordinary journey. She wasn't always the quintessential girl next door. Before she was a reality television superstar, Hugh Hefner's girlfriend, or one of the most popular Playboy cover models ever, Kendra was an athletic tomboy whose father walked out on her family when she was a little girl. She grew into a rebellious teenager with a serious drug habit before she quit cold turkey and beat the odds to graduate from a high school that almost didn't give her a second (or third, or fourth) chance.Following her rocky teenage years, an out-of-the- blue phone call from Hugh Hefner changed everything. Kendra dishes candidly about life in the Playboy Mansion: the sex, the parties, the show, and even her relationships with her Girls Next Door costars—Hef, Holly, and Bridget. She tells the true story about how she and Hank met and built a relationship in secret while she was still Hef's girl- friend and a public face of Playboy. Finally, she reflects on the slew of unexpected changes in the short space of a year that have brought her sliding into home from Playboy party girl to wife and mother with a blooming Hollywood career. If you think you've seen all of Kendra, think again. She's only warming up. . . .

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good celebrity bashing as much as the next person, but this book really seemed to cross the line from amusingly snarky to cruel, scathing, and downright mean-spirited. Although many of these listings might be considered embarrassing on a more political level (such as the lavish hotel accomodations enjoyed by the likes of Whoopie Goldberg during highly-publicized appearances at benefits for the starving and homeless), they aren't exactly the sort of thing you sit around chuckling to yourself about in your free time.
At times the gleefully mocking tone of the book seems wildly inappropriate, such as the entry on Judy Garland, which chronicles, in loving detail, the star's decades-long battle with depression and drug addiction (a battle she ultimately lost). The authors remain cheerfully oblivious to the tragic implications of Judy's constant pill-popping and suicide attempts, however, instead maintaining their juvenile finger-pointing approach ("Judy Garland tried to kill herself twenty-three times in ten years--boy, is she ever DUMB!"
Even more absurd is the entry on the infamous sleaze queen Divine, whose whole life REVOLVED around being crazy and disgusting. (Did you know that Divine ate a real dog turd at the end of "Pink Flamingos"? So did everyone else.) In fact many of the "humorous" tidbits in this section were taken directly from John Waters' book "Shock Value," though in their original form they were somehow much more entertaining.
Once again, I want to clarify that many of these books which make fun of celebrities are quite amusing in my opinion, it's just that the people who wrote this one seem to have some attitude problems, or simply lack an understanding of what is truly funny. I'm aware that famous people make mistakes--that fact, in and of itself, does not constitute humor.
