Frommer's Great Britain Review

Frommer's Great Britain
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have traveled extensively throughout Europe, using the Frommer Guides written by Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince. We have found that they give excellent advice, and that they are unfailingly reliable and cutting edge. We were particularly excited to find the highlights of Great Britain condensed into one easy guide: England, Scotland and Wales. All the sights, hotels, and restaurants were laid out for you, the best in each category--budget to expensive. Numerous options in various price zones were clearly identifiable. For those who do not have time to go into every nook and cranny of Britain, this is the guide for you. The nuggets have already been found by those who have gone there before you and evaluated the attractions, discarding places and things that are not worth the time and money. We're not interested in seeing every pile of ruins with just a few stones in Britain. We want to taste the cream, and Frommer's Great Britain is a rich and highly readable and usable option. Don't leave home without it!

Best of London (Lonely Planet London Encounter) Review

Best of London (Lonely Planet London Encounter)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
London can overwhelm, but this small book makes it manageable for first-time visitors as well as London junkies. There's an overview, sorting the commonly-visited tourist sites by type (sights, activities, kids' activities), as well as shopping, eating, and entertainment listings that provide enough information for a few days' visit. I even found a few gems listed that, in the course of many years visiting London, I had not known about--the Geffrye Museum is a good example. The maps are not as good as the A to Z or Benson's maps, but they work pretty well, and there's a handy Underground map in the front. A bus map of central London might have been helpful, though I'm not sure how they'd cram it in. You'll need something heavier (thus harder to tote around as you explore) for background reading, but this is portable and useful. I own this book and always get it as a gift for friends going to London for the first time. Enjoy!

I bought both this guide and the DK Eyewitness Scotland guide before my trip to Edinburgh. This handy, little, pocket guide was well worth every penny. It was much more informative, had great ideas and suggested fantastic, don't miss, sights. It has everything you need to have a great trip in a city you don't know. The fold out map was a great help too.
The food/restaurant section was hit and miss.A couple of the places we tried were fantastic...a couple of other, terrible. Do not do the Mexican food in Scotland despite what the guide book says. Enough said.
This is the only book you need. It fits in your purse/backpack. We wrote all over ours before we left and hit everything we wanted to do and see.

Frommer's England 2008 (Frommer's Complete) Review

Frommer's England 2008 (Frommer's Complete)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's probably too much to ask any one book to cover all of England in detail. But Frommer's has packed this 800-page monster with all the information they could in an attempt to do just that. Did they succeed? Mostly. For starters, they offer over 20 "Best of" lists that help you zero in on the finest the country has to offer in all sorts of categories ranging from museums to pubs and everything in between. Basic travel information is offered for those completely new to the country to help you start off on the right track. There's even a short offering to help you learn a bit about art and architecture so that you can better appreciate what you will see on your visit. And, of course, there are four suggested itineraries for complete trips. Finally, the remaining 700 pages detailed information on the various geographic areas of England.
Without diminishing the rest of the book, I found the "Best of" lists and the itineraries a great starting point because it helped me zoom in on the part of England that I would most want to visit. From there, I started worrying about the specifics of what I would do there and that's when the rest of the book started to come in handy. But I also purchased The Unofficial Guide to England (Unofficial Guides) and found that I often went back and forth between the two. For information on the Cotswolds, Lake District, and some other aspects of the trip, I found Frommer's to be the most helpful. At the same time, when it came to reviewing the sight-seeing attractions in London I preferred the content and format that the Unofficial Guide used. It's not that Frommer's didn't cover it at all, or that the coverage was poor. But comparing the two, I definitely found the Unofficial Guide easier to use for touring London. Leaving London aside, Frommer's has certainly put together the most comprehensive guide you will find on England. It has every city you could possibly be interested in as well covering the Lake District, the Cotswolds, and other rustic areas of interest to tourists.
In summary, I found the Frommer's Guide to be highly useful and I certainly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to England. I also believe that no one book will have everything when covering a place as diverse as England, so don't limit yourself to just one book.

The 2008 edition of "The Rough Guide to Britain" is the definitive planning guide for those intending a vacation that takes in England, Wales, and Scotland (Ireland, including Northern Ireland, is covered in a separate Rough Guide). In a compact 1,000 page format, this Rough Guide offers choices and lots of them, along with information on when and how to get there.
Britain has much to entertain the visitor, from cosmopolitan London to cathedral towns and grand homes to the wilderness areas of northern Scotland and central Wales. Several thousand years of well-preserved history are on display in a variety of museums, while the major cities offer the lastest in culture and shopping. There is something for almost everyone.
"The Rough Guide to Britain" breaks out its coverage of England, Wales, and Scotland by geographic regions. Each regional chapter points out the touring highlights and the practicalities of dining and lodging. The text is buttressed by graphic maps, black and white photos, and short articles on special items of interest. Color inserts in the Guide focus on items of general interest such as Britain's coastal areas, its literary heritage, and unique festivals worth a look. The Guide has the usual maps of Britain, climatology charts, and the practical details of arriving in and traveling around Britain.
"The Rough Guide to Britain" is very highly recommended to those planning a vacation in Great Britain. This guide, along with appropriate driving maps, may be the only resources needed for an excellent visit.

Just back from a week in London where we constantly used this book to great advantage. In particular, I liked that it covers several day trips outside of London, like Stratford-on-Avon, Salisbury (Stonehenge) and others. A friend recommended a B&B so we did not use this guide for selecting accomodations. The restaurant recommendations were right on. Only 2 small issues - the Milennium Pedestrian Bridge is closed because of wobbling. I think everybody knew this but us, but its not mentioned in the guide. Second, the info phone number for railways has a new area code, but a phone message gave us the correct one. If you stay a week or more, consider getting a Tube pass for zones 1&2. This covered all of our travel in London except to/from Heathrow.

Frommer's London 2010 (Frommer's Color Complete)
Average Reviews:

My wife and I have been to London many times for both business and pleasure. Usually we make at least one trip a year at minimum. We have owned several different travel guides including older Frommers versions. This is probably the best Frommer's of the past few years due to the inclusion of more photo's but I would say if you are a veteran traveler to London this might not be as useful for you.
If you are a first timer to London this is a great guide. It will give you information on the major sites to see including useful information such as opening and closing times, costs, how to get to and from major tourist attractions and the best times to go. Overall this is a great guide for someone new to London who wants to see all the major sites. For you veterans there are probably better options.
One note. As others have mentioned there are several pages in this guide that actually are from the Paris guide. Check pages 281-296 as these are usually the pages which are actually for Paris. If you find this is the case just return your copy for a new one. Hopefully this has now been corrected.

I read this book before we left for London and took it with me. Since we were only going to be there from Dec 26 through Jan 1 we wanted to see as much as possible. The maps were a great help in laying out a logical route for each day. Each place we wanted to see had a description, price, hours, and especially the tube stop in the book. We travelled everywhere by tube (London Underground) so there was no guesswork. Buy a day Travelcard for Zone 1 and 2 and you are set. We never found any mistakes in the book. You must see the fireworks from the London Eye on New Year's Eve. We were on the Waterloo Bridge and it was spectacular.

Frommer's London Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket)
Average Reviews:

I just got back from a five day trip to London showing my wife the sights on her visit. This book was our primary guide for two major reasons.
1. The day by day itineries show the must sees, including where the must see's are in the museums. If you know you're going to be there for a few days, you might wish to regroup them a bit (moving some things from one day to another) to ease a bit of travel, but are excellent overall.
2. The whole thing fits in your back pocket! Most travel guides now are encyclopedias you leave in the hotel room. This one with its convenient fold out high level street plan and Underground map made getting around very easy. The pull out detailed map in the map offers even more detail once you're downtown.
Also, the restaurant guides were superb, important when the pound is $2.00! We really like the Audley and Rules.
BTW, you can also get to Paddington station from Heathrow via the "Heathrow Connection". It's half the price of the Heathrow Express and only takes ten minutes more time. Essentially it's the local train on the same line.
