Patronizing dribble are for those who don't have the nerve to stick their necks onto the chopping block. And if you want to make it in this business, you need to listen to someone who's willing to share the truth, so it's not your... screenplay in the basket.
Whether it be through his books or consulting services, no one has helped my screenwriting more than DB Gilles. Before I wrote my first FADE IN:, like most wannabes I read a lot of "how-to" screenwriting books. You know the standard issue: Field, Segar and gulp! ... McKee.
But when I came across DB's The Screenwriter Within, well, besides being a fun read, it made perfect sense unlike some of the others where I found myself reaching for a slide-rule to help figure out the formulas. Yes, I'm older, and if you're over thirty, great, chapter #33 is aimed at you.
Of course there are similarities between this edition and the other before-mentioned authors. All were written in English. Other than that, hope you're good in math.
William Goldman is cited for saying, "Nobody knows anything," yet, I don't ever remember coming across anything close to DB's 2-page chapter entitled, "Nobody Can Teach Anybody How to Write Dialogue." No patronizing here.
So, if you're a babe-in-the-woods, DB will hold your hand through the darkness and by the time you reach the clearing, you'll be a writing fool. No need for all those other books that'll have you pulling your hair doing structural calculations.
And if you're a seasoned vet, well, might be a good time to reflect, get back on track. It's sure easy enough in this industry to stray because the itch to make a name for ourselves is so strong.
Anyway, DB's selling what you're buying... end of list.

Careers for Writers & Others Who Have a Way with Words Review

Careers for Writers and Others Who Have a Way with Words

Anyone afflicted with the desire to be a writer would benefit from a quick read of this comprehensive analysis of career realities for writers. Robert Bly's first chapter, "The Writing Business," provides a balanced analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of a writing career: You probably won`t get rich, but you probably will be fairly satisfied with your work and your working conditions.
Other chapters explore book publishing, magazine writing, newspapers, advertising, public relations, corporate writing, technical writing, television and film, and freelancing. The chapter on technical writing is thorough and accurate, particularly the quote from Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., that "Newspaper reporters and technical writers are trained to reveal almost nothing about themselves in their writing. This makes them freaks in the world of writers, since almost all of the other ink-stained wretches in that world reveal a lot about themselves to the reader."
Although I applaud Bly's broad treatment of career possibilities, I am bothered by a nagging suspicion that the entire book is dated. In spite of its publication date of 1996, it cites examples no later than 1984. The references to printed books in each chapter are also outdated, with no citations from the 90s. This makes Bly's lists, such as "Fifty Prominent Book Publishers," very suspect.
Therefore, I'd recommend this book for historical research, followed by checking out recent sources to see a realistic, current picture of your career possibilities.
