This has been the best travel resource for our family. Guests arrive at our bay area home and are given this book before they even sit down. It is easy to use and doesn't require that you already have a knowledge of the area. The information is presented clearly and accurately and has made some of the more difficult decisions (due to time restraints) easier to make. In a city where everything is constantly changing, it is surprising how current the information is. We are sending copies to friends who are in the process of making plans to visit from Europe. We are confident that this resource will insure a great trip!

San Francisco: The Unknown City Review

San Francisco: The Unknown City
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a typical guidebook for the traveler. Most of those books are little more than directories of hotels, restaurants, tourist destinations and shopping areas. By contrast, this is the kind of book I could imagine even a non-traveler curious about San Francisco might sit down to read. One would probably know more after merely reading this book than after traveling to San Francisco and rushing around a few touristy areas, camera in hand. In an engaging narrative voice, the authors flesh out the locations with background details and historical context. The emphasis is less on the "must see" tourist locations that the business traveler might squeeze in after his convention is over, and more on the elements that make San Francisco the unique place that it is for those who live there. Make no mistake, practical details about the places covered are not ignored. The main text covers both these details and the bigger picture of what makes each location worth visiting. Smaller sidebar entries are like footnotes, dropping in little bits of trivia along the way. There are plenty of photos and quirky iconic illustrations ventilating the text throughout the book. Highly recommended as an alternative to the mainstream travel guides out there.

Arsenal's Unknown City series of alternative guidebooks designed for tourists and hometowners alike turns its attention to the City by the Bay: San Francisco, where stories of notorious murders, city hall scandals, and untold tales of Chinatown, Haight-Ashbury, and Castro Street share pages with secret dining pleasures, shopping meccas, and nightclub hotspots.

From the Summer of Love back in the 1960s to the Winter of Love in 2004, when the mayor of San Francisco made the city the center of the nation's gay marriage debate, San Francisco has consistently been one of America's most colorful and offbeat urban oases. From pot dispensaries in the Lower Haight to the nightspots in the heavily Hispanic Mission district to private karaoke rooms in Japan Town, all of San Francisco's hidden nooks and crannies are exposed.

There's info on the Castro district, the heartland of America's gay community; the city's hot restaurant scene, home to arguably the best dining in the nation; tidbits on nearby Napa wineries; multi-level sex clubs; and the alleged whereabouts of active opium dens. There's also the story of the confrontation between Orson Welles and William Randolph Hearst at the St. Francis Hotel, when Hearst refused Welles' offer of tickets to the premiere of Citizen Kane; the legacy of Alcatraz and legendary prison escape attempts; and notes on San Francisco icons like the Golden Gate Bridge and the Transamerica Building. Ebullient and chock-a-block with facts and figures, this book raises a glass to life in the City by the Bay.

Two-color throughout; includes a BART transportation route map.

Frommer's Memorable Walks in San Francisco

My wife and I picked this book thinking it would be a good way to see the city. It was not... it was the BEST. We saw so much of San Francisco thanks to this book. We had 8 days to spend there and managed to do 9 of the 11 walks. We went everywhere and saw so much from Haight Ashbury to Golden Gate Park to Nob Hill, the SoMa district... EVERYWHERE. It was great because we could go at our own pace, and not be rushed like a tourist group. We met lots of friendly, helpful people, too.
Whenever we make a return trip this book will come with us again.
Next we are off to Chicago and are armed with that city's version of memorable walks.
Make sure you are in good shape to do these walks, though!

Beer, Blood & Cornmeal: Seven Years of Strange Wrestling Review

Beer, Blood and Cornmeal: Seven Years of Strange Wrestling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you have ever stepped foot in San Francisco, seen these wrestlers in the ring, been to a punk rock show, or lived through this time in the past, you should read this book. You should read this book even if you've done none of those things. It's more than a memoir, more than an autobiography and filled with all of the drama and excitement you would expect -- in and out of the wrestling ring -- from the show and more. So much more.
I lived in San Francisco during the era that this book covers and worked at The Transmission Theater as a bartender for many of Incredibly Strange Wrestling's shows. Bob Calhoun covers this spectacle in such depth and with such precision and detail, it was almost like being in the 90s again, except this time I am a fly on the wall privy to bits and pieces that I never would have known about until reading.

Delving into the organized insanity of Incredibly Strange Wrestling (ISW), this memoir takes a look at the bastard offspring of post-punk garage rock and masked Mexican wrestling. Fielding a cast of crazed characters with names like El Homo Loco, Macho Sasquatcho, and El Pollo Diablo, the show lived up to its name. And if that wasn't enough, cult bands such as NOFX, The Dickies, and The Donnas provided the raucous rock and roll in between the highflying mayhem. ISW emerged from the back alleys and seedy clubs of San Francisco's South of Market scene to headline the historic Fillmore and barnstorm North America on the Van's Warped Tour. At the height of its popularity, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and Metallica's James Hetfield could be seen tossing tortillas (which the promoters supplied) at ringside with the rest of the hell heads, boozehounds, and tattooed party girls.

I bought this book in preparation for a trip to San Francisco and it really helped me understand so much about the city, from the Gold Rush right up to the dotcom boom and crash. I especially liked the use of quotes from old sources that illustrate not just the past but the present as well. Overall, the book is very engaging and well written, I'd certainly recommend it for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of San Francisco than mainstream guide books provide.

Weekend Adventures in San Francisco and Northern California (Weekend Adventures in San Francisco & Northern California) Review

Weekend Adventures in San Francisco and Northern California (Weekend Adventures in San Francisco and Northern California)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Carole Terwilliger Myers, author of the 8th Edition of Weekend Adventures in San Francisco & Northern California, points out in her introduction that there is nothing more disappointing than returning home from a vacation and finding out that you had missed an interesting attraction or you overpaid for your hotel accommodations.
I would have to concur, and as I am a stickler for preparing my travel itineraries well in advance-I just hate surprises and disappointments.
Although there may be several travel guides available pertaining to San Francisco and Northern California, each seeking its own market niche, the Weekend Adventures in San Francisco & Northern California is built around providing information that will aid the reader to quickly ascertain what is of special interest in the area he or she is planning to visit. Moreover, the guide contains useful advice concerning bargain rates, welcoming of families, aesthetically pleasing, historic significance, etc. In addition, the author provides phone numbers, toll-free numbers, fax numbers, and websites.
The 469 pages of the guide is bigger, thicker, and longer than most and it is divided into sixteen sections, a substantial index, and many well-chosen black-and-white photos.
The author commences with San Francisco, and as pointed out, all other destinations radiate from here. Chapters are devoted to Coast South, Coast North, 101 South, 101 North, 1-80 North, 1-880 South, 1-5 North, Highway 49-Gold Rush Country, The High Sierra, Santa Cruz Mountains, The Delta, Wine Country, Lake Tahoe, Winter Snow Fun, and finally Miscellaneous Adventures such as family camps, houseboats, river trips, pack trips, and camping.
Excellent suggestions are offered as to annual events, what to do, where to stay and eat.
For example, if you read the section pertaining to Monterey, you will notice that some of the events listed are the Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival, the Grand Prix auto races, the Jazz Festival, and Christmas in the Adobes.
As for the last one, we are informed, that each year a group of historic adobes are festively decked out with period decorations and illuminated only by candlelight.
Terwilliger Myers' writing is brisk and entertaining, and you can see she has done her homework, as evidenced by her well-researched and useful information.

All in all, the guide makes an excellent reference to visiting San Francisco and Northern California and is a must-have for anyone traveling in the region.

Weighing in at more than a pound and completely revised and updated, the ninth edition of this guide covers the whole range of weekend trip options in the Bay Area, from urban treks through San Francisco and Sacramento to kayaking in the Russian River and backpacking in Lassen Volcanic Park. Each destination includes information on what to do, where to stay, and where to eat. Helpful extras include the most direct driving route and stops along the way. A chapter is devoted to ski areas, with advice on the difficulty of slopes. An additional chapter covers family camps, houseboats, river and pack trips, and other adventures. Clear, current maps; a detailed index; and an appendix itemizing annual events by month and location are part of what makes this the most useful guide of its kind on the market.

To be honest, I haven't really used this guide all that much. I bought the Eyewitness San Francisco book, and that book has been my go-to when I head to the city. This one has a lot of great info in it though. I feel like it's gotten more useful as I've gotten to know the city better. It's just a little too pared down for someone who is brand new to the area.

Lonely Planet Discover San Francisco (Full Color City Travel Guide)
Average Reviews:

Pros:
-Seems to be the most current guide for SF as of my purchase date (July 2011).
-LP has always been my go-to guide for both domestic and international travel. Its recommendations may not always be the best, but I think LP is the most consistently reliable guidebook. I appreciate that LP also segments restaurants/bars/accomodations by budget/midrange/high end so you can choose yourself rather than other guidebooks typically gear the entire book toward one type of traveler (Rough Guide for budget, Dorling Kindersley for higher end).
-Guide features a pull-out map which was helpful.
Cons:
-I did not see (and I could have missed it) any public transportation maps, such as the underground or bus system. Some underground and trolley stops were marked on the pull-out maps but there was not seperate public transport guide/maps. I used the GPS function on my smartphone for bus routes, etc.
-I agree with the previoius reviewer's (J. Wong's) comment about comparing LP to Trip Advisor. I have consistently found that the top Trip Advisor choices for a city are not featured in LP.

I found the guide to be VERY well organized and helpful. The restaurant and hotel suggestions (we stayed at the Cow Hollow Motor Inn) were helpful and spot on. We were not disappointed.
The fold out map could have been more extensive, especially because a couple of the restaurants were in locations that extended beyond the map itself.
The book is light (weight-wise) which is a plus in my view especially when you're doing a lot on foot.

Lonely Planet San Francisco Encounter Review

Lonely Planet San Francisco Encounter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Lonely Planet Encounter guide to San Francisco follows the snappy, concise format of the other books in the series--a highlight chapter, followed by sections (by neighborhood) on where to Shop, Eat, See, and Play, and a conclusion with page-long snapshot essays and details on transportation, history, and practicalities. The opening chapter is a list of 11 top excursions in the city, with parenthetical references to the page number where specific restaurants and sights are discussed. Even the back cover is a useful to six exciting adventures--vintage shopping, club-hopping in SoMa, writing Beat poetry, visiting the Mission, strolling bayside, and visiting foggy Alcatraz.
As a Southern California resident, I visit San Francisco annually. I've used dozens of different guidebooks, and I thought I had a good handle on the city, but author Alison Bing has written about a treasure trove of smaller museums, shops, and entertainment options. This guide is especially useful for the traveler who has the lay of the land and wants to uncover more gems in the city. The closing chapter also has some great suggested reading titles for anyone looking to explore San Francisco a little deeper.

San Francisco For Dummies Review

San Francisco For Dummies

I bought this book back in February for a trip to San Francisco with my husband. I've been to San Francisco before around 13 years ago, but it was my husband's first trip to San Francisco. We carried the book with us all the time and the tips that it gave us were excellent, everything worked out great. For example, we did not rented a car and we made it all the way to the Golden gate bridge outside the city, following the book's tips to use the public bus. Another great tip, was to buy a three-day ticket to the MUNI (and it worked for bus, cable cars and electric cars). The restaurant suggestions for Chinatown and The Mission District were great. Good tips on how to avoid tourists traps. Great tips on planning itineraries and we felt like we saw all the most important attractions/sights in San Francisco. We hit a rainy afternoon and all we had to do was turn our book on the page on what to do if it's raining, great! I will defenetily buy books from these series again.
Have fun in your trip!

I loved this collection from start to finish, which is very unusual for me. The prose was spare and minimal, yet the smallest details seemed to illuminate the characters and their world. Ward is often fun and witty here, but what I found most engaging about this collection was how the characters haunted me afterwards. With subtlety and a soft-touch, the author gets to the heart of the matter each and every time. Even reading the story about a 9/11 widow, I never felt as if the events drove the writing. It's all about the characters here. They feel organic, real, and brimming with stories worth hearing.
