From colonial New York, the story continues through the 20th century to the birth, and rebirth, of the theater district in Times Square and the revitalization of 42nd Street in the mid-1990s. An A to Z listing of every Broadway theater ever to exist is also included. Each listing features a photograph or illustration of the theater, its address, the architect, the opening production, historical information, and, if applicable, when the theater was demolished.• From an award-winning author and internationally known expert on American theater history• The definitive history of theater in New York City• Features rare archival photos and never-before-published pen-and-ink drawings from the 1930s by Anthony F. I really liked this guide. It was pretty much on the mark and crammed a lot into a small book. Much easier handling than other books on Colorado and gives a sense of the personality of each town and resort, if not always enough in-depth info on recreation.

Here We Go Again: My Life In Television Review

Here We Go Again: My Life In Television
Average Reviews:

Not many celebrities can say they are enjoying a renaissance and resurgence in their careers at the tender age of 88, but Betty White is not your every day celebrity. In 2010 Betty became the oldest performer to host "Saturday Night Live" (for which she won an Emmy), plus she continues to work in movies and primetime TV, most recently in TV Land's "Hot In Cleveland". She also had a memorable role on the soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful" and she continues to appear in commercials. Suddenly Betty White is everywhere.
With a career that has spanned sixty years on television, Betty White continues to shine and is an example to other celebrities who have reached that certain age that it doesn't matter how old you are; just keep working and love what your doing.
In this insightful biography that was published way back in 1995, Betty describes her life in television and how she got started in the business. Eventually it wasn't long before she became famous for being the celebrity who appeared regularly on game and talk shows, working with Jack Parr, Johnny Carson, and Allen Lunden, with whom she married. Eventually Betty did a guest-part on "The Carol Burnett Show", became famous for her role as man hungry Sue Ann Nivens on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", and to a whole new generation of fans played naive Rose Nyland on the 1980's/1990's sitcom "The Golden Girls".
In these pages Betty discusses how she got her two most famous roles on two of the most beloved comedies in TV history, how it was like to work with the giants in the industry, and how and why those beloved shows came to an end.
There is much more too on these pages on the the wonderful life of a lady who never slows down. The reader realizes Betty loves her life and loves the career that has made her a household name. Thoroughly readable, "Here We Go Again..." is an insightful memoir on one of the legends in TV comedy.
The book also contains multiple black and white photos of Bette displayed sporadically throughout the book that gives the reader a mental picture of where Betty was at certain times in her career.

A MEMOIR OF BETTY WHITE'S FIRST FIVE DECADES ON TELEVISION—AS IRREVERENT AND IRRESISTIBLE AS THE BELOVED ACTRESS HERSELF BETTY WHITE first appeared on television in 1949 and has gone on to have one of the most amazing careers in TV history, starring in shows such as Life with Elizabeth, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and The Golden Girls, among many others. She is one of the hardest-working actresses of any era, and her sense of humor and perennial optimism have seen her through half a century of industry changes and delighted millions of fans. Now, during Betty's sixty-first year on screen, a year in which she has enjoyed a huge resurgence of popularity, her 1995 memoir makes a comeback too. Here We Go Again is a behind-the-scenes look at Betty's career from her start on radio to her first show, Hollywood on Television, to several iterations of The Betty White Show and much, much more. Packed with wonderful anecdotes about famous personalities and friendships, stories of Betty's off-screen life, and the comedienne's trademark humor, this deliciously entertaining book will give readers an entrée into Betty's fascinating life, confirming yet again why we can't get enough of this funny lady.

Me of Little Faith Review

Me of Little Faith
Average Reviews:

This is an hilarious set of essays documenting one man's effort to understand his own spirituality as well as that which has been (and continues to be) thrust upon him by his semi-Jewish upbringing and many well-meaning friends. Honestly, I was in tears with laughter as he suggested those of us who gather annually to fight over Christmas dinner should keep our voices down lest we wake the baby Jesus. (I don't recall inviting Lewis Black to my family's Christmas dinner, but I could swear he'd given a fairly accurate account in this book!)
The zealots of religion (i.e., those who feel they need to step in and defend God) need to turn away from this book immediately. If you can't laugh at yourself and your human foibles -- especially with regard to how you practice your faith -- you won't find this book funny at all. The rest of us -- those of us who know we are human, frail, and utterly laughable at times in the eyes of God as well as those around us -- are ready converts to Black's satire of the human spiritual condition.
OK, I could have done without the reprint of the play toward the end of the book. Some comedy just doesn't come across when you read it on the page because you need the voices and the visual nonverbals to make it work. I expect it would be hilarious if I could actually see it (note to publishers: Next time just give us a DVD or a URL, OK?), but it doesn't do well when read.
But that's the only little sour note in this collection. It's funny, it's touching, and it's the best set of observations on faith in the US I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

Ron's interesting oral story-telling ability translates very well into text. It's probably better to be familiar with his delivery so you can "hear" it on your head rather than read it cold. But either way, this is a great read and I hope Ron has plans for another book soon!! If you have a long flight or bus ride ahead, I highly recommend this one to make it fly by! I just wish he'd come by Massachusetts once in a while!!!!!!

Following Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour to the page, Ron White (affectionately known as "Tater Salad") delivers the laughs in his distinctive and beloved down-home style. Fans of Ron White's "perfectly-phrased everyman gripes and raunchy, grinning asides*" will find much to appreciate here. He riffs on everything from obnoxious designer sunglass salesmen to his wife's wealthy but stingy family, and he revisits some of his most famous characters, such as his troublesome dog Sluggo ("He ran away all day. He was gone for ten hours. So, to punish him, when he came home I took him for a walk."). Best of all, White's hilarious material is accompanied here by clever artistic interpretations, courtesy of illustrator Matthew Schulz. BACKCOVER: "Ron White's comedy is about as understated as a chainsaw, and twice as sharp." —STAR TRIBUNE (MINNEAPOLIS) "White's inspired comic mind finds a dozen sources of humor where the average comic would find only one or two, while making a fine art of the deadpan style." —DAILY VARIETY

It's small enough to be able to stick in a pack or a back pocket but is filled to the brim with useful information on what to see in DC, where to eat, how to get there (excellent maps including details on the Metro), and where to lay your head at the end of the day. We picked this up on a whim but found that it helped us narrow down the best sights and points of interest for Washington, DC when we only had a few days to stay. When Sex Was Dirty Review

When Sex Was Dirty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As with the previous "Tales of Times Square," this book visits the glory that was Forty-Deuce back in the heyday of its vileness: the late 70s and early 80s. AIDS hadn't yet reared its head, Plato's Retreat and other sex clubs and bath-houses were still going strong, X-rated shops and theatres were all over the place, and prostitutes owned the streets.
Ah, the good old days.
Friedman approaches everything with an honest and open-eyed wonder-- he was at the center of things as a very youthful contributer to Al Goldstein's SCREW, and he meets some memorably loathesome people, as well as some endearing ones. His writing is mostly crisp and entertaining, but be warned: if you find sex icky, you might want to stick to the romance section of the bookstore. Sex here is a commodity, and porno is a business. Along the way we learn how Josh lost his virginity and his favorite starlets to whack off to-- it's that kind of a book.
Nice to know that the son of one of my favorite authors, Bruce Jay Friedman, is carrying on the tradition of mordant humor and jaundiced commentary on the less respectable side of things...

Using Humor to Maximize Learning: The Links between Positive Emotions and Education

I just had the good fortune of meeting author, Mary Kay Morrison, at a professional humor conference. She has written a seminal book for practicing educators on how to bring humor into your classroom in positive, productive ways. Mary Kay is an educator "from the trenches" so she knows first hand the importance and effectiveness of humor with learning. This book is filled with all sorts of gems - wonderful quotes, related research, and absolutely great on-the-job practical suggestions. At the closing of each chapter there are suggestions for inter-active school improvement activities. How about a year long professional development/building improvement goal to maximize learning through the use of humor? This book lays it all out. If you are an educator, be it administrator, teacher, or para-professional, I highly suggest this book. And, if you are a parent, or anyone who cares about and is interested in how people learn, gift this book to the people who can influence students to become what we all should strive for - being life- long learners. Highly recommended!

What is humor exactly? How do you use it to maximize learning? If it is so important, why is it rarely mentioned in teacher preparation without some clues for finding and using it? The purpose of this book is to affirm, sustain, and encourage educators in the practice of humor not only as a personal tool to optimize a healthy lifestyle, but to maximize the benefits of humor in education. These benefits include current research-based data on the use of humor to nurture creativity, to increase the capacity for memory retention, to support an optimal learning environment and to build safe communities that reflect the relational trust necessary for collaborative learning. An environment of fun is an indicator of a culture of trust. Each chapter of this book includes a study group format and powerful practice ideas for leaders. These tools can facilitate creative data analysis for educational leaders interested in understanding the relatively new field of positive psychology and how it can contribute to a joyful learning environment that promotes collaborative relationships.

I heard Robert Schimmel on Stern last week and picked up this book before a flight. I was familiar with Schimmel's humor so I got a lot of what I expected (and wanted) in the book.
What I didnt expect, but loved, was the humanity and compassion Schimmel shows for fellow patients, family and friends through his fight with cancer. He clearly states the importance of both selfishness and selflessness to get him through this darkest hour. Most of all, he relies on humor and an open mind to get him and his posse through his harrowing experience with chemo.
The takeaway is multi-layered, but bottom line, a positive attitude and a great support network clearly help Schimmel Lick the Big C.
Hope to get to see him do stand up some day, I am sure his show contains the passion he won through his hard fought victory over cancer.

Writer's Guide to Hollywood Producers, Directors, and Screenwriter's Agents, 2002-2003: Who They Are What They Want And How to Win Them Over
Average Reviews:

This book is mostly hype and little delivery. The "inside" information can largely be found on the net and/or in better-written books by screenwriters of prominence. The agent and producer listings are vague and of little help. The book tells you almost nothing about "what they want" and virtually nothing about "how to win them over." All in all, it's poorly written and verbose and could have been cut down to a third of its length. Some of it is shockingly inappropriate, such as recommending to African-American writers where they can get good fried chicken in LA. In sum, it's yet another add-water-and-stir screenwriting book by somebody long on self-aggrandizement and short on Hollywood experience. I also find it quite suspicious that twelve five-star reviews here on ... were posted within a three-day period. Yeah, right.

Soul Train - from a fledgling platform for black singers and political activists in the 1970s to a popular brand name in the modern age - what does it all mean? "A Critical History of Soul Train on Television" is a complete and comprehensive look at the television program and its effects on black culture, and American culture as a whole, with a focus on the show's creator Don Cornelius and how he has branched out elsewhere in entertainment. Enhanced with interviews with former cast members, chronology, and Cornelius's other work, "A Critical History of Soul Train on Television" is a top pick for community library collections and fans of the TV show.

As a wildly popular local dance show, Soul Train provided a venue for Chicago's soul singers and political activists and gave African American teenagers their first significant chance to see and identify with their peers on television. The subsequent national series garnered even more popularity, establishing producer and host Don Cornelius as one of the most successful pioneers of African American television production. This work discusses Cornelius's role in the evolution of his groundbreaking series from a small, all-black 1970s television show to a lucrative brand name applying not only to the program, but also to awards and various merchandise in the present day. The first two chapters focus on Cornelius's years in Chicago and the initial launching of Soul Train in 1970. The next two chapters explore how the nationally televised, California-based version of the show rose steadily in both popularity and cultural influence among primarily African American viewers, and how Cornelius himself became a rising celebrity during that time. The final chapters illustrate Cornelius's efforts in branching out beyond the dance show through various music-related business ventures, including the Soul Train Music Awards. The work includes interviews with several former cast members and guests, along with a complete chronology of the series and Cornelius's other professional ventures.

****
This book is all about women and pleasure, and why we feel so guilty when we think about experiencing or actually experience pleasure. It is different from other books because of its authors, Maria and Maya Rodale, of Rodale Press fame. The mother and daughter perspective was especially intriguing to me. Both women share their experiences along their journey to find out who they are as individuals, and as self-defined "pleasure revolutionaries". They interweave the book with fun exercises, stories of famous "pleasure revolutionaries", historical details, and much more.
The book brings in many unconventional ideas, such as reading romance novels, exploring non-traditional religions, traveling alone, and the like. While I would not necessarily follow the paths these two women did in any particular area, I felt like the book gave me permission to venture out and try some things I would not ordinarily try. I have to admit that after all of their positive experiences with romance novels, I am considering even giving them a try, too.
One reviewer said there was not a lot of substance to this book, and I really disagree. It is full of resources for exploring "pleasure" in your own life (including Internet sites, lists, books, etc.), and a great guide. It is entertaining and fun to boot. It's the type of book that would be interesting for girlfriends to read (I'm loaning my copy to my best friend) or even better, for a woman's book club!
One caveat: If you are pretty straight-laced, you might find some things too adventurous here---like some of the erotic Internet sites or discussions of sexual toys, etc.---I did not find anything offensive however---all was in good taste. I'm the type of person who feels comfortable taking what fits and not worrying about the rest...if you're not that way, this might not be the best choice for you...if you are, read and enjoy!!

Pleasure:The state -- or feeling -- of being pleased, gratified, delighted. A source of enjoyment. Sensual gratification. What's "your" pleasure? However you define it, pleasure is vital to every woman's life -- to your life -- especially in today's hard-driving, hard-working society. Yet most women have lost sight of their vital need for pleasure, and feel guilty for taking even ten minutes for themselves -- they don't want to seem self-indulgent, or they can't afford the time, or they're too busy taking care of other people instead of themselves. For your own sake -- and ultimately for your loved ones -- it's high time you dropped the guilt and took back "your" pleasure. In "It's My Pleasure," Maria Rodale, the dynamic leader of a powerful lifestyle corporation who successfully revolutionized her own business, and Maya Rodale, her talented writer-daughter, show you how to create a pleasure revolution in your own life -- to stop hiding your pleasure and incorporate it fully into everything you do, no matter what your age, situation, or religious background. In the Rodales' exciting vision of every woman's potential, pleasure is not a simple, momentary experience to be segregated into a few minutes a day. It's endemic to women's bodies, minds, and experiences on Earth. And it's essential for your health and success. Drawing from their years of research into women's history -- including the suppressed ancient Goddess religions -- as well as the latest scientific findings, the Rodales prove that, for women, pleasure is the path to freedom, happiness, and self-fulfillment. To show us the myriad ways to find satisfaction and become the heroines of our own lives, theyconduct lively interviews with "Pleasure Revolutionaries" including scientist Helen Fisher, historian Riane Eisler, writers Julia Quinn and Ruth Reichl, and gourmet pioneer Alice Waters. They also profile inspiring heroines from history -- adventurous, colorful women from all over the world and all walks of life -- from the fictional Nancy Drew and Dagny Taggart and powerful mythic figures such as Inanna and Mary Magdalene to popular artists Georgia O'Keeffe and Madonna, romance novelists George Sand and Nora Roberts, and activist Victoria Woodhull, who was the first woman to run for president. These Pleasure Revolutionaries also prove that change, self-discovery, and self-improvement don't have to involve suffering. Synthesizing their findings into a practical, affirming philosophy, the Rodales spice it with their own experiences, fun tips, and lists, and fuse it into appealing, realistic guidance for life, love, friendship, and romance. "It's My Pleasure" celebrates women's voices, insights, and experiences in a format that any woman can use to take action, create positive change, meet the highs and lows of a demanding world, and develop confidence, optimism...and lasting pleasure.

Heckler Review

Heckler

This sequel to Killer Material is even better than that book was. Impossible you say, well no Barton has actually improved further on Biff Kincaid's adventures in the world of stand up comedy. By the way this is a stand alone novel and you do not need to have read Killer Material prior to reading this one. Heckler also does not give away any of the plot from the previous novel either so you will not ruin the enjoyment of Killer Material by reading this first. The only repeat character is Biff himself so read the two in whichever order you can get them.
In this novel Biff is called up by the Vegas comedy club Comedysino, to replace Tiger Moore as the headliner. Once there he is told Tiger has been stabbed in his hotel room with the words `Get Off The Stage You Suck' painted in blood on the wall. It seems there is a serial killer who the media is calling the Heckler, who is reaping revenge on comedians. Tiger was Biff's friend, as is Louie Baxter who is receiving similar notes to which Tiger did. Biff sets out to find out the identity of the Heckler and stop him before it is too late.
This is a brilliant literacy masterpiece which will both make you laugh and thrill you. Other lesser known but brilliant authors you may want to check out are Harry Bingham, with his novel The Moneymakers and Maxx Barry with Syrup. If you enjoyed this book you will no doubt love those two as well.
