Caesar's Hours: My Life in Comedy, With Love and Laughter Review

Caesar's Hours: My Life in Comedy, With Love and Laughter

This is a wonderful memoir that takes the reader down memory lane. As anyone one reading this biography knows, Sid Caesar was one of the foremost comedians of his time. In fact, he was actually ranked the third all time great comedian (after Jackie Gleason and Lucille Ball) by a documentary about the greatest comedians of all time, which documentary was featured on the A & E cable television channel.
I know that my parents used to watch Cid Caesar's ground breaking television program, "Your Show of Shows". I myself was too young to have any recollection of it. I do, however, recall that as a young child, together with my family, I watched his subsequent show in the latter half of the nineteen fifties, "Caesar's Hour". Sid Caesar was the then king of comedy, and he broke trail for many of the comedians that were to follow him. Many of the greatest comedic writers to ever write for television started out writing for his shows. Greats such as Neil Simon, Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, and Woody Allen were among some of his writers. No wonder that era was heralded as the Golden Age of Television!
In his memoir, Sid Caesar talks only a little about himself on a very personal level. Still, he comes across as an intelligent man who dearly loves his wife of over sixty years. He acknowledges his personal foibles, such as a drinking problem that, at times, threatened to overwhelm him, as well as a never ending quest for creative perfection. This book is not so much about Caesar, the man, but rather about Caesar, the performing artist. Consequently, Sid Caesar the man remains a bit of a mystery. On the other hand, Sid Caesar, the performer, comes vividly to life. This is more of an artistic autobiography rather than a personal one.
He lovingly reminisces about how he got his start on the road to fame and fortune. Born in 1922 in Yonkers, New York, to Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia, Sid was an accomplished musician who could play the saxophone with the best of them. Having started out as a musician, Sid Caesar would cut his comedic teeth in the borscht belt of the Catskill Mountains. It was there that he would also meet Florence, the love of his life. At the onset of World War II, Sid would play with a number of orchestras in Manhattan, before signing up with the Coast Guard in 1942, and in 1943 he married his beloved Florence.
While in the Coast Guard, Sid became part of a successful revue for the troops, which raised his profile. This propelled him to Hollywood after his discharge from the Coast Guard, where he would become involved in the movie industry, starring in a number of comedies. From there, he would go on to perform for the nightclub circuit on the East Coast. Sid was not a stand-up comedian, but rather, a comedic sketch artist. From there it would be a short trip to Broadway, where Sid would achieve tremendous success in a revue called "Make Mine Manhattan", in which he would turn in an award-winning performance. This would lead him right to television, which was still in its nascent stage, and into the homes and hearts of millions of Americans.
This book is chock full of information on the early days of television, which had more in common with theatre and stage work than with film, as it was live television. Undoubtedly, this factor was responsible for much of the frenetic pace and spontaneity which existed. Today, television is more like film rather than stage work, as very little is shot live. Sid Caesar lovingly lays out for the reader many of his comedic sketches that were his special shtick. He meticulously explains how his comedic routines were fashioned and performed.
He speaks glowingly about his wonderful professional partnership with the late Imogene Coca, the googly-eyed comedienne, with whom he would be in perfect comedic harmony. They would make beautiful music together with their hilarious sketches that parodied slices of life and the human condition. Together, these two would touch a chord among audiences that would forever enshrine them in television history, making them the golden couple of the Golden Age of Television.
This is an engaging artistic biography that will appeal to fans of Sid Caesar and to those with an interest in the early years of television. Those readers who enjoy memoirs and biographies will likewise find this to be a worthwhile and interesting book.

Off-Broadway Musicals since 1919: From Greenwich Village Follies to The Toxic Avenger Review

Off-Broadway Musicals since 1919: From Greenwich Village Follies to The Toxic Avenger
Average Reviews:

This book is entertaining, thorough, and thought-provoking. It has led me to check out several writing teams/individuals that I was unaware or barely aware of before (Elizabeth Swados, Al Carmines, Nancy Ford/Gretchen Cryer, Polly Pen, for starters). There are not really too many books out there specifically about Off-Broadway, so this is really a welcome addition to my bookshelf. And who knew that several of the early SNL writers and actors were in an Off-Broadway musical revue?

Although the venue Off Broadway has long been the birthplace of innovative and popular musicals, there have been few studies of these influential works. Long-running champs, such as The Fantasticks and Little Shop of Horrors, are discussed in many books about American musicals, but what of the hundreds of other Off-Broadway musicals? In Off-Broadway Musicals since 1919, Thomas Hischak looks at more than 375 musicals, which are described, discussed, and analyzed, with particular attention given to their books, scores, performers, and creators. Presented chronologically and divided into chapters for each decade, beginning with the landmark musical Greenwich Village Follies (1919), the book culminates with the satiric The Toxic Avenger (2009). In this volume, any work of consequence is covered, especially if it was popular or influential, but also dozens of more obscure musicals are included to illustrate the depth and breadth of Off Broadway. Works that introduced an important artistic talent, from performers to songwriters, are looked at, and the selection represents the various trends and themes that made Off Broadway significant. In addition to essential data about each musical, the plot and score are described, the success (or lack of) is chronicled, and an opinionated commentary discusses the work's merits and influences on the musical theatre in general. The first book of its kind, this highly readable volume will please both the theatre scholar and the average musical theatre patron or fan.

South Park Conservatives: The Revolt Against Liberal Media Bias Review

South Park Conservatives: The Revolt Against Liberal Media Bias
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me say that the chapter on anti-liberal political humor in South Park Conservatives is hilarious-one of the funniest things I've read in age! With rich examples, Anderson shows the subversive genius of South Park's creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and gives the reader an excellent sense of what comedians like Nick Di Paolo and Colin Quinn, and talk show host Dennis Miller, are up to in their humor. The chapter is worth the price of the book.
But there is lots more of interest in South Park Conservatives, which provides a clear-eyed view, expressed in reader-friendly, punchy prose, of the remarkable shifts in media and culture that are undermining liberal control of the institutions of information and argument. Want to know why liberals aren't good at talk radio? Read the chapter on the rise of conservative talk radio and find out. Anderson's take on how the blogosphere is transforming politics-drawing on extensive interviews with everyone from Andrew Sullivan to Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit)-is a model of lucid analysis (plus, it's pretty funny too, except maybe to CBS News and Dan Rather). The chapter on Fox News, also based on behind-the-scenes interviews, in this case with Fox people like Sean Hannity and Dick Morris, offers lessons both liberals and conservatives can learn from. The final chapter, on the rising conservatism-or at least anti-liberalism-of college kids, is fascinating, in part because so the reader encounters so many interesting student voices.
One last thing about this book should be noted: it's a real triumph of reporting. So few books, by conservatives or liberals, feature any reporting these days. One of the pleasures of South Park Conservatives is the thickness of detail-everything from Neilson ratings to off-the-cuff remarks by comedian Colin Quinn about PC critics. You come away from the book knowing a lot more.

For the better part of 30 years, liberal bias has dominated mainstream media. But author and political journalist Brian Anderson reveals in his new book that the era of liberal dominance is going the way of the dodo bird.

The Rough Guide to California 9 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Review

The Rough Guide to California 9 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the mid-nineties I spent about a month living out of my car in California. I drove, camped, and couch surfed from Eureka to San Diego, and many points in between. Before returning home, I went to Lake Tahoe and then continued north to Washington State via Mt. Shasta. I didn't take a guidebook with me; it didn't occur to me since I knew I wouldn't be needing hotel and restaurant reviews. At the time I lived on an island, in a cabin, without a computer or internet. When I rolled into a town, I just picked up the local "city paper" or equivalent and found the friendliest looking coffee shop to go to and learn what I could about where I was. I read bulletin boards and just walked or drove around to see what was there.
The Rough Guide to California would have been a fabulous addition to this trip. The writers let you in on everything they know, and they are consummate travelers. You can get major hotel information, of course, but you also get hostel and camping information, the secret sweet spots in a city, and some history and bits of information that make travel that much more enjoyable. For instance, I was not aware that more lesbians are moving over to Oakland from San Francisco these days, but I feel like I am 'in the know' now that I do.
A lot of guides also forget about the details of visiting the deserts, mountains and park trails, and the best ways to go about seeing them, but here you can get that. Since my rubber tramp days, I have traveled to a lot of places around the world. And as my means increased, I utilized travel websites to get insider information on where to go and what to look for. I also incorporated the more standard guides into my research; Frommer's and Fodor's became companions of mine, along with Lonely Planet. From now on, Rough Guides will be included in my library.
I love to travel. I love the smells, the sights, the people, the food, the feel of a different place, and I want to understand why and how it all came to be that way. I am obsessed with finding the inside spots, staying in odd and eclectic places and avoiding tourist traps whenever possible. If you are like me in this predilection, the Rough Guides are a great find. Travel guides tend to tell you about what they find most interesting or worthwhile in a place, and in the 9th edition of The Rough Guide to California, you get to explore California with authors who are not only interesting and funny, but also witty and talented writers. I enjoyed reading it, even in the sameness of my own living room.

The Playboy Guide to Bachelor Parties: Everything You Need to Know About Planning the Groom's Rite of Passage-From Simple to Sinful Review

The Playboy Guide to Bachelor Parties: Everything You Need to Know About Planning the Groom's Rite of Passage-From Simple to Sinful
Average Reviews:

I am a skeptic when it comes to the usefulness of guide books, but this one is worth the investment. The book definitely saved me time and money, and it taught me how to throw a better party. Here are the 3 main reasons why I give it 5 big stars:
1. Well researched and organized. The author packs the book with information, facts and ideas that are valuable and practical. The book explains your options, from basic planning to often overlooked details -- check lists, budget guidelines, common scams, and even a brothel glossary -- it's all included. All important party questions -- why, how, who, what, when and how much -- are answered in precise terms.
2. Very well-rounded content. The Playboy title might lead you to think this book is all about strippers, but it actually gives ideas for tame as well as wild parties. It even explains how to balance out a variety of activities, to keep everyone happy and sustain the desired party vibe.
3. Funny and reads well. The author has a concise and humorous style. I think it works best as a reference, letting you find out what you need to know fast. But you could also read it straight through. Classic Playboy cartoons are mixed in with the text, making it entertaining to browse.

The Playboy Guide to Bachelor Parties makes a great gift for any man, whether he's planning a traditional raunchy boozefest or a more civilized affair of steaks and scotch. Learn what usually goes wrong and why; the who, when, and where of invitations; how much the night will cost; the ins and outs of cigars, booze, and limousines; and last-minute bachelor party ideas. There are more options than you think! Activities range from the PG-rated fishing, golfing, skydiving, and whitewater rafting to the R-rated strippers and shot glasses. Do you know how to toast the groom? How to call for a stripper -- and not get scammed? And what to tell your girlfriend the next day? Playboy, in its 50th year of celebrating bachelorhood, knows best. • Contains complete listings of possible party activities and prices • Includes complete city guides for hotspots like Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Tijuana • Explains brothel terms and stripper scams • Saves party planners money and hassles • Offers a mix-and-match activity chart and to-do checklist • Loaded with entertaining trivia, quotes, toasts, and classic Playboy cartoons

Mastering DC : A Newcomer's Guide to Living in the Washington, DC Area Review

Mastering DC : A Newcomer's Guide to Living in the Washington, DC Area
Average Reviews:

This book provides a good "intro" for a newcomer to DC- especially if you will be relying on the metro for transportation, as it lists what metro lines to take to local shopping centres. This may seem trivial, but when you need a can opener two days after moving and have no car it becomes very important.
The only problms is that the info is very likly to become dated very quickly- especially the restaurant guide. Newer establishments and attractions weren't listed. As well, there seems to be a bias to certain areas with more "trendy" attractions, and a glossing over of less popular (and less expensive to live in) areas.

Best in Show: The Films of Christopher Guest and Company Review

Best in Show: The Films of Christopher Guest and Company
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has some great stories from the cast and details about deleted scenes that are not on the DVD of the films, but contains a lot of filler.
For fans of Christopher Guest himself, you get a very detailed history of his performing career, although Guest himself was not interviewed for the book, he speaks through quotes from magazine interviews.
And that is how the book reads, like a long magazine article. For much of the book the author just recaps the major plot points of Waiting for Guffman, Best In Show and A Mighty Wind.
The main opinions/anecdotes of the films come primarily from: Harry Shearer (a lot of Harry Shearer), Bob Balaban, Fred Willard, Deb Theaker, Michael Hitchcock and surprisingly June Chadwick (Jeanine from Spinal Tap) who has yet to be in an actual Christopher Guest film, but is oft quoted concerning improv acting.
The most entertaining moments of the book come from the explanations of bits that were cut from the films, especially from Fred Willard who seems very disappointed that many of his bits went unused.
An OK read that's not expensive, not a long book so it's good for and afternoon read. Worth the money, if you are a Guest completist.

Best in Show is the first in-depth look at the method behind film director and actor Christopher Guest's madness - and genius. John Kenneth Muir focuses his attention on the acclaimed Guest-directed trilogy of what some call "mockumentaries": Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. In these films Guest has escorted rapt audiences into the purportedly real worlds of a small-town theatrical company, dog show competition, and folk music festival. Muir also details the events that lead to Rob Reiner's influential and legendary This Is Spinal Tap, which Rolling Stone called the best rock and roll movie of all time, and in which Guest played the part of guitarist Nigel Tufnel. Much of Best in Show exemplifies the unique process by which Guest directs films. He employs a common repertory company, improvises scenes often without any rehearsal, and does not use any screenplay with dialogue, instead following a detailed outline often co-authored with his ace actor/writer Eugene Levy. Company members that have been interviewed for this book include Fred Willard, Harry Shearer, Bob Balaban and Michael Hitchcock. Guest's influences - Saturday Night Live, National Lampoon - as well as his more conventional comedies, such as The Big Picture and Almost Heroes, are studied. Best in Show is general enough to bring new fans to the table, yet detailed enough to satisfy the most in-the-know Guest fan and film student. A complete filmography with Guest's directing, acting and writing credits is included, as is the appendix, "You Know You're in a Christopher Guest Film When ..." Guest once commented, "I am drawn to people who have dreams that are slightly out of reach." Now, thanks to John Kenneth Muir, the fascinating world of Christopher Guest and company is substantially more within reach.

Pauline Frommer's London: Spend Less, See More (Pauline Frommer Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this before a travel course to London that was just over 2 weeks long. I had been to London previously, but only for a couple of days with my family and didn't really know the city.
I loved this guidebook! I shopped for guidebooks for hours and this was by far the best I found, and it proved an as-good-and-better resource during our trip compared to my classmates books (mostly the biggies Fodors and Frommers).
The book was very easy to read. I read it cover-to-cover a couple of months before the trip, and found the writing style casual and sometimes hilarious!
What I love about this book is it covers all the essential London activities that tourists want to do, but also delves into getting to know the city like a true Londoner and seeing some great attractions that have niche appeal or are off the beaten path. AND it does all this keeping budget as a top priority!
It's perfect for students, families, and basically anyone who wants an authentic experience without throwing money around.
The dining recommendations were great. Nearly everyone I passed on the street with good prices and atmosphere that my classmates and I wanted to eat at was covered in this book!
I loved London and need to go back to this amazing city throughout my life, and I think this book and future editions will be a great help in planning my trips in the future. The accommodations section was not relevant for this trip, as my school booked our large group into a hotel, but I read it anyway and the advice on finding affordable B&Bs and inns with great facilities will prove very useful for future trips.
The only real flaws I found with this book is that
1) the maps are all kind of spread out. There's good maps of areas like Notting Hill that aren't always in other maps of the central city, but it takes some thumbing through to find them when you're standing in the middle of the street needing directions. ALso, there is no bus maps or tube maps, but obviously those are very easy to pick up at the nearest tube station, and that ensures they're up to date. Also, I'd recommend supplementing the book with a book mini map such as the A-Z pocket guide, which is mentioned in the book and proved very useful and portable!
2) The book is not completely up to date. I have the 2nd edition, and it doesn't seem that they put out a new edition each year like the bigger guidebooks. As a result, I got a few surprises on my trip. The prices, especially on food, were consistently a pound or two higher than the book suggested, and I think this is probably do to the increasing cost of food supplies during the recession, and due to recent VAT increases. I also tried to find a small tea and coffee museum that was in the guidebook, and also was featured in my A-Z map (2009 edition), and turns out the museum has closed in the past year and was completely gone! However, I don't think these little out-of-date bits negate the huge usefulness of this book!

My only problem with this book was that I had to stop reading it in public because my uncontrollable laughter and subsequent tears made people stare at me. That aside, I had the best time reading this book. I laughed and laughed and laughed. Prior to reading the book, I was unfamiliar with Susie Essman other than her portrayal of Susie Greene on Curb Your Enthusiasm. While Essman does write about her experiences on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and her development of the Susie Greene character, there is so much more info, insight and humor in this book. Not surprisingly, Susie Essman is very different from the character she plays on t.v., and it is thus very interesting to read about the woman and the comedian behind the character. Susie Essman is one funny lady, and this is one truly funny and fun book. A true pleasure!

IN WHAT WOULD SUSIE SAY?, Susie Essman sheds the crasser layers to reveal how she went from an anxiety-ridden, struggling stand-up comic to being one of the funniest women on television, playing Susie Greene on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm. Emerging as one of the most successful performers in her field, Essman goes behind the scenes of a life in comedy with her funny cohorts, including Joy Behar, Rodney Dangerfield, and, of course, Jeff Garlin and Larry David, while also providing sidesplittingly funny wisdom on a range of topics that she's highly unqualified to expound upon, including men, sports, hypochondria, and stepparenthood. WHAT WOULD SUSIE SAY ABOUT... MARRIAGE? "It took me a long time to find the man I was willing to commit myself to. Even the word commit is troublesome. One is committed to a mental institution." MEN WITH DOGS? "As a dog lover, I've researched many different breeds and I've begun to realize that you can tell a lot about a person by what breed of dog they choose to associate with. A bit self-conscious about your cellulite? A guy with a shar-pei is for you. They're hard to find, but cheaper than lipo." THE BEAUTY OF MENOPAUSE? "I guess I just have to accept the fact that I'm going to end up a bald, fat, sweaty, irritable woman with a dry vagina and a full beard who never sleeps and has memory loss so I won't even be able to remember how hot I used to look!" STEPPARENTHOOD? "My mother used to tell me 'you can't buy your kids' love.' Bullshit. You can, and it's exponential. They're like Russian mail-order brides -- the more you spend, the more they love you." WHAT WOULD SUSIE SAY? is Essman's irreverent, refreshingly candid, and hilarious retort to the dubious facts of life that we all face.

Cracking Up: American Humor in a Time of Conflict Review

Cracking Up: American Humor in a Time of Conflict

There is something both refreshing and disturbing about the fact that Jon Stewart's fake news show does the best job of reporting political news. One can have years of academic training in political science, read or skim five newspapers a day, and then turn on the evening news to discover that Brian Williams or Katie Couric have completely missed -- or misrepresented -- the most important story of the day; and then, later in the evening, Jon Stewart's irony-laden comedy show often gets the news of the day exactly right. How this situation came about and what it means for politics and our culture -- and how comedy is used to distract and inform and confuse and enlighten political discourse -- is only part of what this book covers, but that's plenty. I can think of no better treatment of this important subject.

What do Jon Stewart, Freddy Krueger, Patch Adams, and George W. Bush have in common? As Paul Lewis shows in Cracking Up, they are all among the ranks of joke tellers who aim to do much more than simply amuse. Exploring topics that range from the sadistic mockery of Abu Ghraib prison guards to New Age platitudes about the healing power of laughter, from jokes used to ridicule the possibility of global climate change to the heartwarming performances of hospital clowns, Lewis demonstrates that over the past thirty years American humor has become increasingly purposeful and embattled. Navigating this contentious world of controversial, manipulative, and disturbing laughter, Cracking Up argues that the good news about American humor in our time—that it is delightful, relaxing, and distracting—is also the bad news. In a culture that both enjoys and quarrels about jokes, humor expresses our most nurturing and hurtful impulses, informs and misinforms us, and exposes as well as covers up the shortcomings of our leaders. Wondering what's so funny about a culture determined to laugh at problems it prefers not to face, Lewis reveals connections between such seemingly unrelated jokers as Norman Cousins, Hannibal Lecter, Rush Limbaugh, Garry Trudeau, Jay Leno, Ronald Reagan, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Bill Clinton. The result is a surprising, alarming, and at times hilarious argument that will appeal to anyone interested in the ways humor is changing our cultural and political landscapes.

I randomly stumbled onto this book while looking for new wisdom to add onto must-reads by Uta Hagen, Michael Shurtleff, Stanislavski, etc. After having done a lot of research on how to be a successful actor in NY the "hard way", I think I agree with most of Alterman's suggestions - just wish I'd had this book in the beginning =)
An actor should always be reading, attending a lecture or workshop - you know, doing *something* to learn. New York has its particular nuances, and this book simplifies some of the hassles that a newcomer might find overwhelming. It gives some useful advice on dealing with the three most important things you'll have do when you get here:
*finding a place to live
*finding a job you like ('cos you have to eat)
*finding acting work, any and all kinds of work
Having a thicker-than-average skin here is an absolute must, for rejections run a-plenty, and they have your name on them. But this place is also (in my view) the most exciting, rewarding endeavour you'll make in your performance career.
This book has got lots of juicy info on auditioning, headshots, unions, different sorts of acting jobs (such as voiceover work), casting directors, agents, useful internet urls, etc. There are several interviews with casting agents & directors on dos-and-donts for actors - nothing beats knowledge from the professionals.
Good luck, and welcome to the greatest theatre city in the world...

It's Not TV: Watching HBO in the Post-Television Era Review

It's Not TV: Watching HBO in the Post-Television Era

This is a book that tries to have an academic perspective on TV and TV shows. It's a way of saying, that TV isn't always just trash. It focuses on HBO, because more than any other television channel HBO tries to create original, interesting, great quality TV. However, the book also discusses how, and whether or not, HBO succeeds in this project.
Great for Television buffs, who thinks that TV can also be studied in an academic and scholarly fashion.

Since first going on the air in 1972, HBO has continually attempted to redefine television as we know it. Today, pay television (and HBO in particular) is positioned as an alternative to network offerings, consistently regarded as the premier site for what has come to be called "quality television."This collection of new essays by an international group of media scholars argues that HBO, as part of the leading edge of television, is at the center of television studies' interests in market positioning, style, content, technology, and political economy. The contributors focus on pioneering areas of analysis and new critical approaches in television studies today, highlighting unique aspects of the "HBO effect" to explore new perspectives on contemporary television from radical changes in technology to dramatic shifts in viewing habits. It's Not TV provides fresh insights into the "post-television network" by examining HBO's phenomenally popular and pioneering shows, including The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City as well as its failed series, such as K Street and The Comeback. The contributors also explore the production process itself and the creation of a brand commodity, along with HBO's place as a market leader and technological innovator.Contributors: Kim Akass, Cara Louise Buckley, Rhiannon Bury, Joanna L. Mental Review

What can I say to express my absolute joy at reading this book? Each chapter is a roller coaster of bliss--laugh out loud funny, deeply moving, slyly insightful. The stories reveal many facets of the author; yet, reveal even more about the reader.
Mr Sarfaty has been blessed with a gift of language. He uses his words like Van Gogh uses paint--bold and subtle at the same time. Whether it is talking about his Dad "winning the neurological trifecta" of disease, or referring to a man's peculiar sexual obsession with balloons as "Balloonacy," he shows himself to be an absolute master of the English language.
I was most impressed with the complete lack of bitterness or bitchiness that can infect autobiographical tomes. We are shown a man struggling to understand his world and himself with great humor, humility, and insight. Mr Sarfaty's infectious love of Life shines from every page and left this reader happy, satiated, and enjoying life a bit more!
Thank you Mr Sarfaty!

Eddie Sarfaty's astute and acerbic stand-up effortlessly captures the everyday absurdities of life, blending self-deprecation and sarcasm with a razor-sharp instinct for the ridiculous. In Mental, he expands his hilarious insights into a collection of autobiographical essays that explore career lows, cheapskate exes, the wonder and hell of family, psychopathic felines, and so much more...Whether recounting a family trip to Paris, where his ailing father shouts obscenities at the Mona Lisa, or discovering his mother surfing JewHunt.net in search of a mahjong à trois, Eddie excels at bitingly, but lovingly, mocking his family.Spotlighting his own misadventures with equal relish, Eddie recounts his darkly funny experience stage managing an ill-fated Portuguese production of The Phantom of the Opera, reveals taking Ecstasy before lunch with Hillary Clinton, and recalls a one-night stand whose fondness for balloon animals would have animal activists up in arms. Eddie Sarfaty is a natural storyteller, and his candid wit caustic, yet surprisingly poignant proves just as endearing and hilarious in print as it is onstage.

ReelViews 2: The Ultimate Guide to the Best Modern Movies on DVD and Video Review

Movie critics review movies, we read reviews and we pick good movies. Sounds easy enough? Far from it! The problem is that critiquing a movie is subjective and there is no right answer. Not only that, but there are hundreds of movie critics all with different opinions.
So how exactly do you find a good movie? Well find a movie critic with similar tastes, that easy. Of course finding him or her is the problem. For me is James Berardinelli, there is no movie we go see without checking out JB's Rating. He is great; sharp writing, knowledgeable, funny but to the point, without being pretentious. I highly recommend him.
But since his website is free, why buy the book? Well for a couple of reasons:
1.Easier to browse: I hate the frames and the retro look of the website.
2.Easier to access: That way you can easily grab the book and check its review for movies on TV or On-Demand.
3.Tighter, Shorter Reviews: Which online sometimes go a bit too long.
For the record, I wasn't paid for the book review. I am just a thankful reader who has saved hundreds of dollars and thousands of hours thanks to James Berardinelli.
