The Best of Phoenix and Tucson: The Ten Best Review

The Best of Phoenix and Tucson: The Ten Best

This is what I want from a travel guide. As I'm considering a lengthy trip to Arizona, and to Phoenix specifically, I want to know the what's what on the what-to-see. "The Best of Phoenix and Tucson: The Ten Best" has that, with a hearty dash of personality.
Lots of travel guides take a similar tack: list the top ten of the usual categories. What makes this one different is that the writers have avoided becoming lackeys to the hotel of entertainment industry. Instead of being crammed with corporate logos, they focus on their opinion. I like that.
No one will be surprised to read most of the lists: dining, resorts, romantic vistas, but nice to see were lists like, "The Ten Best Other Ethnic Restaurants." Naturally, they have a number of general and Hispanic restaurant lists, but I was pleased to see the authors really did their homework. Now I know I can check out "Peter's European Cafe" and taste their Hungarian palacsintas (stuffed crepes).
Phoenix and Tucson are neighbors. Anyone visiting one community is likely to visit the other, but they are not twin cities. Therefore, the writers wisely create separate sections for each city. Anyone willing to make the 110 mile drive will be ready.
A tourist will love this book, but I suspect any local will discover things about his home city previously hidden deep in the phone book.
I fully recommend "The Best of Phoenix and Tucson: The Ten Best" by Don W. Martin, Betty Woo Martin.

Dave Pratt, Behind the Mic: 30 Years in Radio Review

If you like radio, or even if you like stories about people who follow their dreams while keeping their integrity, you will like this book. If you live in the Phoenix area you will find it especially interesting since he gives names and addresses for locations where events took place. You'll find yourself saying "Hey, I know where that is". His love for his family really comes across, too. I enjoyed the chapter with many behind the scenes stories of the celebrities he has interviewed.

Occasionally tear-jerking, sometimes funny, always sincere ... Dave Pratt, Behind the Mic: 30 Years in Radio takes readers on a ride with the man who morphed from small-town boy to one of radio s most prolific personalities: Dave Pratt, CBS host of Dave Pratt in the Morning on KMLE Country 108. Pratt, who earned over 100 national and local awards and topped ratings in three formats, describes how he embraced his values in a high-life atmosphere. As compelling as Pratt s rise to fame, however, is his triumphant battle with cancer, which he shares in his memoir, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Frommer's Arizona 2008 (Frommer's Complete) Review

I didn't buy this online. I visited the local bookstore and took every book on Arizona off the shelf and looked at them all and chose this book because it had what I considered the best overall layout and approach. It turned out to be an **excellent** guide for our week-long Arizona trip. The book provides just enough information on each area as well as suggested drives and activities. I found it to be extremely helpful. Unlike other guidebooks, this one has a personality shining through. There's a person behind the information---you'll find language like 'this is my favorite..." or "...is why I like this ..." Some of the descriptive passages are very well-written. The information was timely and helpful, too. We constantly referred to it and felt very good about our choice of guidebooks. It was so helpful, I made a mental note to go back and write this review...

Christine Bailey's "Phoenix, Scottsdale, Sedona & Central Arizona: Great Destinations: A Complete Guide" is an unusual entry in the world of modern visitor guides. Although it includes the standard reference material found in any good guide, this book is actually meant to be read by the traveler. Its conversational tone reflects the author's living experience in "the Valley of the Sun" as well as the necessary research.
Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the country, and one of Bailey's challenges is to do justice to a cityscape and metropolitan area spread over a couple of thousand square miles of high desert central Arizona. It turns out there is a lot to see and do beyond enjoying the warm, dry climate: everything from golf to professional sports. Bailey succeeds in providing a honest sense of history and character in detailing the recreational and touristing opportunities. Her narrative includes a broad swath of recommendations for places to eat, sleep, and shop.
This reviewer's one complaint is a shortage of detailed maps that could tie together a geospatial sense of a sprawling metropolitan area. A supplemental map of Phoenix is recommended to go along with this guide, itself highly recommended as an introduction to Phoenix and central Arizona.

Fodor's Arizona & the Grand Canyon 2011 (Full-Color Gold Guides) Review

This book is easy to follow, wisely laid out and super for details in planning a vacation no matter for how long, a week or a weekend. It is a little scant on hiking trail information like the level of difficulty or actual lengths. It could provide a trail guide, but these are also available on other sites and this book does provide much more than just what a trail guide book would.
