Anthony Burgess steps out of his psycodelic shell to bring a down to earth translation of the worlds greatest love story. Rostand created a tale true to the human heart filled with romance and poetry, but it took Anthony Burgess to bring the story to the modern reader. There are no 'thee's' or 'thou's' in this adaption, just natural, modern writing. In essence, Burgess did not translate Rostands classic play, he wrote the story over as a poem. Burgess did Rostand the greatest honour, making Cyrano De Bergerac, a wonderfull romance, and beautiful story accessable to modern audiences

Acting Is Everything: An Actor's Guidebook for a Successful Career in Los Angeles
Average Reviews:

I started reading this book thinking I could jot down a couple useful pieces of information and quickly advance to another book on acting. Boy was I wrong!
This book is overflowing with so many sources that you may as well toss out the Yellowpages. Judy Kerr did a flawless job of providing step-by-step instructions regarding the business-side of acting and how you can get started.
Sure, there are useful quotes from all kinds of big names and experienced veterans about the technique, but Judy was very wise to simply refer readers to all types of classes, coaches and workshops rather than attempt to write a book on how to act. Experience is the only way you truly learn, not by reading about others who experience it.
I'm currently saving up to take the 2-week trip to Los Angeles to research the city which is mentioned in the book with detailed stops to make.
If you're wondering whether or not this book should be on your bookshelf at home, buy it now. No, don't continue reading my review!! You're not listening and I feel disrespected. You could've been entering your shipping address and credit card info by now you lazy bum! Ya wanna act? Okay, your character is shopping for a book by Judy Kerr... ACTION!!!

Frommer's San Antonio and Austin (Frommer's Complete Guides) Review

Frommer's San Antonio and Austin (Frommer's Complete Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had good luck with Frommer's Guides for locations all over the world and welcome their recent appearance as Kindle books. In the past, I have cut out maps and sections of the paperback books to take with me on a trip so I could have a list of dining and sightseeing choices. With Kindle versions of the Frommer's guides, I can now take the entire book with me. However, Frommers first attempt at moving to the electronic book world falls a little short of ideal. The guide seems to have the same content as the print version, but not enough effort has been made to take advantage of the electronic format. There is no index because there are no actual pages in the eBook, but an index with active links to the text would be even easier to use than a paper index. Cross references in the book could also benefit from active links. The table of contents is set up with links, so this somewhat makes up for the lack of an index. Also, all website URL's in the guide have active links to your web browser, and this is very useful. The biggest disappointments for me are the maps. Only low-resolution bit-image maps are imbedded in the text. Much of the map is unreadable, and a pinch zoom on an iPad just gives a magnified view of the low-resolution map. Frommers does have zoomable PDF versions of the maps on their website, but this requires downloading the maps and moving them to iBooks, followed by a sync with a desktop computer. It works, but I would prefer the PDF maps to be imbedded in the text. An even better improvement would be an active link of each landmark to Google Maps. The Frommer website did not have the San Antonio - Austin PDF maps when I looked for them, but they put them up right away after I sent Frommer's an email pointing out the omission.
The Kindle version is a welcome improvement over a bulky paperback that has to be added to luggage, and its content for San Antonio and Austin is just what I expect from the excellent Frommer's Guides. However, it could be even more useful if it took full advantage of its electronic format. This deficiency may be in part to the constraints of a Kindle version, but the best medium for travel guides in the future is clearly the electronic book format.

After reading this book, I was aware of the available modes of transportation along the Vegas strip. I was actually looking for places and sites to view aside from the casino's and really didn't obtain enough information from the book. The book did touch lightly on a few places to seek entertainment, but I actually found out more just from surfing the web.

I finished your book and just had to write and say what a pleasure it was reading it. I was born in 1971 but grew up watching Lucy reruns and always felt a connection with her. I've read so much about her and seen most of her appearances too.
I grew up in a small town in MA and always imagined meeting Lucy in person and getting to know her. After reading this book I feel like in some small way I did.:)
I've read other books by friends of Lucy and enjoyed them but this one felt just a bit more personal and from the heart. I was able to get a signed picture of Lucy years and years ago and I still treasure it.
Sincerely, Eric Dooley

"Knowing how much Mom liked Michael Stern, I knew his book would be honest-and it is. I HAD A BALL is full of stories no one but Michael would know. His friendship with Mom is evident on every page. A good read. Thank you Michael." -DESI ARNAZ J R .

"Michael's memories are my memories, only clearer. What a talent for details! It was very moving for me to relive so much of our lives through Michael's eyes. Very entertaining. Charming. And, more importantly, true. As Mom wrote on one of her photos to him, 'Happy Thoughts.'" -LUCIE ARNAZ

In 1971, ten-year-old Michael Stern thought he had died and gone to heaven as he watched a filming of Here's Lucy. He was enthralled with a redhead gifted with beauty, stage presence, and the ability to make others laugh. Over the next few years, he would attend several more filmings, meet Lucy, and eventually become (in Lucy's own words) her "number-one fan."

In his memoir, Michael Stern offers a refreshing glimpse into the life of a natural comedienne and actress as he provides a fascinating narrative on what it was like to become first a fan and then a friend with one of the biggest television personalities of all time. Known to fans simply as Lucy, she entertained millions of people across the world with shows like I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, and Here's Lucy. But to Michael, who was eventually allowed access into her private world, she was a fascinating woman with whom he would share many unforgettable adventures.

I Had a Ball is a unique tribute to Lucy's legacy, her spirit, her talent, and her enthusiasm for life-sure to entertain Lucy fans, television aficionados, and comedy lovers around the world.

Lovetypes: Discover Your Romantic Style And Find Your Soul Mate
Average Reviews:

Dr. Avila proposes a theory for how people will be romantically compatible based on their Myers-Briggs type indicator. He has done a nice job describing the behavioral characteristics of each type. However, I disagree with his hypothesis on appropriate matches. I was surprised that Dr. Avila did not incorporate other research into his book.
For each type, he believes that the exact same type would be appropriate - or the exact opposite type. Other research suggests that people need to share at least 2 preferences to be compatible. Moreover, that the one dichotomy that people often match up on is the S and N. His theories are also in direct contradiction to Kiersey's Temperament - which states that Idealists and Artisans are fundamentally at odds, as are Rationals and Guardians. Avila recommends these matches.
I also found his recommendations for venues to meet partners to be weak. Unless one is in their mid-20s, I can't imagine going to a law library to meet an INTJ.
I don't think that this book was worth the money.

I just finished reading Ross Shafer's book "Nobody moved your cheese" on my flight to Alaska and I have already recommended it to several people on the plane. I am going to tell all of my friends, co-workers and even strangers, that they must read this book. It is the best Self Help/non-Self Help book you will ever read. Shafer takes on the so-called self helpers, with great wit and insight. It is a very enjoyable read!!! Now, you must excuse me. I have to go figure out my 'Plan B'. Lonely Planet Discover San Francisco (Full Color City Travel Guide)

Pros:
-Seems to be the most current guide for SF as of my purchase date (July 2011).
-LP has always been my go-to guide for both domestic and international travel. Its recommendations may not always be the best, but I think LP is the most consistently reliable guidebook. I appreciate that LP also segments restaurants/bars/accomodations by budget/midrange/high end so you can choose yourself rather than other guidebooks typically gear the entire book toward one type of traveler (Rough Guide for budget, Dorling Kindersley for higher end).
-Guide features a pull-out map which was helpful.
Cons:
-I did not see (and I could have missed it) any public transportation maps, such as the underground or bus system. Some underground and trolley stops were marked on the pull-out maps but there was not seperate public transport guide/maps. I used the GPS function on my smartphone for bus routes, etc.
-I agree with the previoius reviewer's (J. Wong's) comment about comparing LP to Trip Advisor. I have consistently found that the top Trip Advisor choices for a city are not featured in LP.

The Game Behind the Game: Mastering the Art of Bullshit Review

The Game Behind the Game: Mastering the Art of Bullshit
Average Reviews:

Parr is a black man that has been very successful in syndicated radio. In this book, he urges people trying to get a job or trying to rise up in the hierarchy that there are times where the best actions are to do a little "a$$-kissing." The narrative is autobiographical and motivational as he describes what he has done in rising to his level of success.
His advice is unorthodox, but I generally found it refreshing. For example, his fourteenth and last rule is "Put the Power of Negative Thinking to Work For You in a Positive Way." His point is that while it is necessary to have lofty goals, those ideals must be realistic and that you MUST have a plan. One of the best segments of the book is on page 223:
"Thinking positively is nice, but it has nothing to do with getting anywhere. Having a goal is nice, but a goal alone is useless if you don't know how to play the game."
This is a nice grounding in reality in a world where so many people indicate that all it takes to succeed is to have a positive attitude. That is a scam; success is the combination of believing in yourself and making the right decisions based on a sensible plan of action.
Parr also uses phrases that only a black man could use with impunity. The phrase "Dumb Negro Syndrome" (DNS) is used several times. While it is a reference to the earlier need for blacks to pretend to be ignorant in order to avoid showing up whites, Parr extends it to include workers of all types. He uses it to refer to the situations where the outward speaking of the truth will publicly expose a superior in an error or oversight. His point is that while the urge would be to be brutally honest, there are times when it is best to "play dumb" so that the right thing is done without offense.
As Parr acknowledges, some of the minority readers of the book will accuse him of being an "Uncle Tom", accepting degradation in order to achieve personal advancement. While I am not a minority, it is easy to see why some would believe that. However, this is advice for people of all types, for Parr is right in stating that every aspect of life where interaction with others is required is a series of compromises and the creation of convenient and effective community falsehoods. Or expressed in Parr's style, "the world runs on BS."

Thug Lovin' (Thug 4) Review

Thug Lovin' (Thug 4)
Average Reviews:

First, let me say that I have been a "die hard" Wahida fan. I have read all of her books. However, "this &*#@) RIGHT HERE " was unbelievable (and not in a good way)! We fell in love with Trae, Tasha, Kaylin, Angel and the rest of the crew in books 1 - 3. Those characters are not recognizable in Thug Lovin' (book 4). I feel as though I have been lied to. At the end of Thug Lovin, I hated Trae, was disappointed in Tasha, disgusted by Marvin and saddened by Kyra. I can appreciate the need to "mix it up". But, this was a GRIMY tale. Trae's behavior was inconceivable. The fact that he cheated on Tasha was the LEAST of his foul behavior. What he did to Tasha at the end of the book is what we tell our daughters, sisters, girlfriends, etc to NEVER accept. It was inconceivable, unnecessary and not consistent with Trae's character. Why take such a loved character and have him beat his wife to the point where he doesn't know how she got on the floor? Are you kidding me? What is that and what was the point of reducing him (them) to that level? Don't devoted readers of the series deserve better than that? How is that possibly 5 stars? Furthermore, the Tasha that we know would NEVER accept that behavior from him. The real shame is that there are so few TRUE showcases of Black Love. The magic of books 1-3 is the message that our powerful connections do exist (contrary to what the media would say) and that they are to be celebrated. What Trae did to Tasha at the end of the book cheapened him and the story told about him and Tasha in books 2 and 3. It went far beyond "shock value". How can he possibly be redeemed? What's next? Does Kaylin shoot Angel? Is Faheem a cross-dresser? Does Jaz develop a crack addiction? We waited a year for THIS? I feel cheated.

See a Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody Review

See a Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After creating many excellent songs and albums while a member of Husker Du, Sugar, and as a solo artist, Bob Mould comes through with another winner in his 2011 autobiography, "See a Little Light: The Trail or Rage and Melody", co-written with Michael Azerrad (author of the widely praised "Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991"). Bob recounts his own history, both personal and professional, in a mostly chronological, easy-to-read manner. On the personal (non-music) side, Bob explains his struggles with growing up as a gay person in a dysfunctional family in a small, rural town, his three primary, long-term romantic relationships, his quitting cold turkey both drinking and cigarettes about a decade apart, his body image issues, his 7 month foray as a creative consultant with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1999-2000, and his coming of age and full self-acceptance as gay man that gradually increased in the late 1990s and fully bloomed in the mid-2000s. On the musical side, Bob discusses his early interest in music from 45 RPM singles he received as a young child, moving to the Twin Cities for college and (fairly quickly) forming Husker Du with like-minded musicians Grant Hart and Greg Norton, the musical evolution Husker Du went through from their formation in 1979 to their dissolution in January 1988 (with the band's break-up, at least from Bob Mould's point of view, chronicled in a story I had not read or heard about before), the varying personal circumstances between the creation of the two albums released in his first part of his solo career, the mostly positive highs, especially early on, of his time playing in Sugar with David Barbe and Malcolm Travis, and the various aspects of the second part of his solo career, ranging from his go-it-alone approach to his late 1990s albums (the eponymous Hubcap album and "The Last Dog and Pony Show") to his boredom with alternative rock and interest in electronica to ultimately finding a balance between loud guitar rock, singer-songwriter material, and electronic music in his mid-to-late 2000s albums, starting with 2005's "Body of Song". At least to this reader, Bob was able to find a good balance between talking about Bob Mould the musician and Bob Mould the human being, and perhaps the most striking thing about the book is how much Bob has grown as a person and gained self-acceptance, happiness, and comfort with who he is during his life, especially since about 2004. "See a Little Light" is an engrossing read, and I was able to read the entire book within a 24 hour period between the time it came in the mail until the time I finished it.
One final thought: in this reviewer's opinion, this book is a better and much easier to read book than Andrew Earles' Husker Du biography that was published in late 2010. Not only does this book cover a broader scope in the musical (not to mention personal) life of one Husker Du's members, rather than (mostly) covering just the 1979-1987 Husker Du period, and not only is it written from a first-person point of view rather than a third-person point of view, but it is also edited much better, avoiding the frequent repeating of stories and information that plagued Mr. Earles' book.
If you have any interest in Bob Mould as a musician, or even in Bob Mould as a "non-stereotypical" gay man (with this reviewer speaking as a heterosexual male), this book is well worth picking up.

The long-awaited, full-force autobiography of American punk music hero, Bob MouldBob Mould stormed into America's punk rock scene in 1979, when clubs across the country were filling with kids dressed in black leather and torn denim, packing in to see bands like the Ramones, Black Flag, and the Dead Kennedys. Hardcore punk was a riot of jackhammer rhythms, blistering tempos, and bottomless aggression. And at its center, a new band out of Minnesota called Hüsker Dü was bashing out songs and touring the country on no money, driven by the inspiration of guitarist and vocalist Bob Mould. Their music roused a generation. From the start, Mould wanted to make Hüsker Dü the greatest band in the world - faster and louder than the hardcore standard, but with melody and emotional depth. In SEE A LITTLE LIGHT, Mould finally tells the story of how the anger and passion of the early hardcore scene blended with his own formidable musicianship and irrepressible drive to produce some of the most important and influential music of the late 20th century. For the first time, Mould tells his dramatic story, opening up to describe life inside that furnace and beyond. Revealing the struggles with his own homosexuality, the complexities of his intimate relationships, as well as his own drug and alcohol addiction, Mould takes us on a whirlwind ride through achieving sobriety, his acclaimed solo career, creating the hit band Sugar, a surprising detour into the world of pro wrestling, and most of all, finally finding his place in the world.A classic story of individualism and persistence, Mould's autobiography is an open account of the rich history of one of the most revered figures of punk, whose driving force altered the shape of American music.

The Mailroom: Hollywood History from the Bottom Up Review

The Mailroom: Hollywood History from the Bottom Up
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a former talent agency trainee. I worked at one of the majors. This book tells it like it is, and I wish this book was published before my talent agency stint. If you have ever seen the show "Survivor", you can get an idea of what it's like to climb the agency, or Hollywood ladder. There are very few spots, and there many people clambering for those spots. And those people who want it the most will do whatever it takes. It's very cutthroat. An agency with 100 agents, has 100 assistants, all of whom want to be agents. Maybe 10 of them will make it. Family members of Hollywood VIP's most probably WILL get promoted to agents (but after that it's still sink or swim..you'll read the story of Peter Guber's daughter in this book...she sunk). Same goes for Harvard grads...deep Harvard connections in Hollywood. Many trainees quit. The attrition rate is huge. It's a crazy business, and nearly impossible to have a balanced life as a trainee (or agent, or for anyone else in Hollywood). It's no walk in the park for new agents either. They start with a tiny salary (although more than a trainee)and must perform or they're out.
Before going to Hollywood, be real with yourself and determine if you're cut out for it. This book gives you a good glimpse into those who make it. Unless you are highly extroverted, and an extremely high energy person, than don't choose this career. If you are a person who needs downtime to collect their thoughts, than don't choose this career. If you are a person who needs their 8 hours of sleep a night, than don't choose this career (you may never sleep again!). If you aren't a highly social person, than don't choose this career (i.e. does your phone ring off the hook in your personal life?). Are you politically savvy, or do you put your foot in your mouth? Can you handle egomanic clients? (and agents). Can you handle being screamed at on a regular basis? Can you handle the pressure of doing more work in one day than most people accomplish in two weeks, including juggling several hundred phone calls? I'm convinced that those agents that make it to the top, are people who'd make a fortune in any business. They're natural salesmen, born with charisma; have endless energy, and can win people over with a glance.
Also, determine if your morals/values are congruent with Hollywood. You might have to do some nasty things to people on your way up the ladder to success. In Hollywood, nastiness is embraced, not frowned upon. In Hollywood, real world morals and values are turned upside down. Believe it or not, many people in Hollywood are so egomanical that they consider people who don't work in Hollywood to be, "losers", or "the little people" (unless you're an internet billionaire or the equivilent). They believe they are the chosen ones. Even if you made a couple mil a year manufacturing cardboard boxes, they'd turn their nose up at you. It's a very snobby club.
Does all this bring people happiness? For some I guess. It seemed to me that many agents were very unhappy and perpetually stressed out.
Although my experience was interesting, had I realistically assessed my personality, which I would have, had I read this book, I would never have set foot in Los Angeles. Other than that, this book is a very entertaining read on the ins and outs of a ruthless business.
