Not only was the author and alter-ego Bill Brennan one of my father's best friends, he was at various times his boss, his customer, his tenant, his perfect host, his best drinking buddy, his greatest confidant and his biggest fan. My father was not George Carlin, but since I have observed Mr. Brennan in the above roles many times, I found his book George Carlin's Alter-Ego by His Alter-Ego to be one of the best reads I have ever enjoyed. I first met Bill in 1958 when I was 6 years old at the original Dayton (Ohio) Racquet Club, where he the owner/proprietor, and my parents were members. Since I was too young to "get" Carlin, much less get to see his show, I never had the pleasure of meeting him. But he was a great hit there and everywhere else I know. From my intimate knowledge of Brennan, I found many of these stories to be refreshing and further affirmation of Carlin the comedy legend. The anecdotal nature of this book makes it an easy and enjoyable read, with the stories and further insights sealing the legacy of George Carlin as one of the greatest philosophers of modern American storytelling. The genius of Bill Brennan is he packages the same Carlinesque delivery into a man behind the lens view of George the man, making him even more genuine than any of us fans ever knew. Two Thumbs and Two single digits up to this book. You may well laugh 'til you wet yourself, but you are advised to do so in the privacy of your own bathroom.
